Then Job replied: | 1Then Job answered, |
"I have heard many things like these before. What miserable comforters are you all! | 2"I have heard many such things; Sorry comforters are you all. |
Will there be an end to your windy words? Or what provokes you that you answer? | 3"Is there no limit to windy words? Or what plagues you that you answer? |
I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could pile up words against you and I could shake my head at you. | 4"I too could speak like you, If I were in your place. I could compose words against you And shake my head at you. |
But I would strengthen you with my words; comfort from my lips would bring you relief. | 5"I could strengthen you with my mouth, And the solace of my lips could lessen your pain. |
"But if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I refrain from speaking--how much of it goes away? | 6"If I speak, my pain is not lessened, And if I hold back, what has left me? |
Surely now he has worn me out, you have devastated my entire household. | 7"But now He has exhausted me; You have laid waste all my company. |
You have seized me, and it has become a witness; my leanness has risen up against me and testifies against me. | 8"You have shriveled me up, It has become a witness; And my leanness rises up against me, It testifies to my face. |
His anger has torn me and persecuted me; he has gnashed at me with his teeth; my adversary locks his eyes on me. | 9"His anger has torn me and hunted me down, He has gnashed at me with His teeth; My adversary glares at me. |
People have opened their mouths against me, they have struck my cheek in scorn; they unite together against me. | 10"They have gaped at me with their mouth, They have slapped me on the cheek with contempt; They have massed themselves against me. |
God abandons me to evil men, and throws me into the hands of wicked men. | 11"God hands me over to ruffians And tosses me into the hands of the wicked. |
I was in peace, and he has shattered me. He has seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target; | 12"I was at ease, but He shattered me, And He has grasped me by the neck and shaken me to pieces; He has also set me up as His target. |
his archers surround me. Without pity he pierces my kidneys and pours out my gall on the ground. | 13"His arrows surround me. Without mercy He splits my kidneys open; He pours out my gall on the ground. |
He breaks through against me, time and time again; he rushes against me like a warrior. | 14"He breaks through me with breach after breach; He runs at me like a warrior. |
I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and buried my horn in the dust; | 15"I have sewed sackcloth over my skin And thrust my horn in the dust. |
my face is reddened because of weeping, and on my eyelids there is a deep darkness, | 16"My face is flushed from weeping, And deep darkness is on my eyelids, |
although there is no violence in my hands and my prayer is pure. | 17Although there is no violence in my hands, And my prayer is pure. |
"O earth, do not cover my blood, nor let there be a secret place for my cry. | 18"O earth, do not cover my blood, And let there be no resting place for my cry. |
Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. | 19"Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, And my advocate is on high. |
My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; | 20"My friends are my scoffers; My eye weeps to God. |
and he contends with God on behalf of man as a man pleads for his friend. | 21"O that a man might plead with God As a man with his neighbor! |
For the years that lie ahead are few, and then I will go on the way of no return. | 22"For when a few years are past, I shall go the way of no return. |
