For the music director; according to the shushan-eduth style; a prayer of David written to instruct others. It was written when he fought against Aram Naharaim and Aram-Zobah. That was when Joab turned back and struck down 12,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. O God, you have rejected us. You suddenly turned on us in your anger. Please restore us! | 1To the chief Musician upon Shushaneduth, Michtam of David, to teach; when he strove with Aramnaharaim and with Aramzobah, when Joab returned, and smote of Edom in the valley of salt twelve thousand. O God, thou hast cast us off, thou hast scattered us, thou hast been displeased; O turn thyself to us again. |
You made the earth quake; you split it open. Repair its breaches, for it is ready to fall. | 2Thou hast made the earth to tremble; thou hast broken it: heal the breaches thereof; for it shaketh. |
You have made your people experience hard times; you have made us drink intoxicating wine. | 3Thou hast shewed thy people hard things: thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment. |
You have given your loyal followers a rallying flag, so that they might seek safety from the bow. (Selah) | 4Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah. |
Deliver by your power and answer me, so that the ones you love may be safe. | 5That thy beloved may be delivered; save with thy right hand, and hear me. |
God has spoken in his sanctuary: "I will triumph! I will parcel out Shechem; the Valley of Succoth I will measure off. | 6God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth. |
Gilead belongs to me, as does Manasseh! Ephraim is my helmet, Judah my royal scepter. | 7Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the strength of mine head; Judah is my lawgiver; |
Moab is my washbasin. I will make Edom serve me. I will shout in triumph over Philistia." | 8Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe: Philistia, triumph thou because of me. |
Who will lead me into the fortified city? Who will bring me to Edom? | 9Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom? |
Have you not rejected us, O God? O God, you do not go into battle with our armies. | 10Wilt not thou, O God, which hadst cast us off? and thou, O God, which didst not go out with our armies? |
Give us help against the enemy, for any help men might offer is futile. | 11Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. |
By God's power we will conquer; he will trample down our enemies. | 12Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies. |
