After Joshua died, the Israelites asked the LORD, "Who should lead the invasion against the Canaanites and launch the attack?"1Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
The LORD said, "The men of Judah should take the lead. Be sure of this! I am handing the land over to them."2And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
The men of Judah said to their relatives, the men of Simeon, "Invade our allotted land with us and help us attack the Canaanites. Then we will go with you into your allotted land." So the men of Simeon went with them. 3And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.
The men of Judah attacked, and the LORD handed the Canaanites and Perizzites over to them. They killed ten thousand men at Bezek.4And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.
They met Adoni-Bezek at Bezek and fought him. They defeated the Canaanites and Perizzites.5And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
When Adoni-Bezek ran away, they chased him and captured him. Then they cut off his thumbs and big toes.6But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings, with thumbs and big toes cut off, used to lick up food scraps under my table. God has repaid me for what I did to them." They brought him to Jerusalem, where he died.7And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem and captured it. They put the sword to it and set the city on fire. 8Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
Later the men of Judah went down to attack the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev, and the lowlands.9And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.
The men of Judah attacked the Canaanites living in Hebron. (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba.) They killed Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.10And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
From there they attacked the people of Debir. (Debir used to be called Kiriath Sepher.)11And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:
Caleb said, "To the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher I will give my daughter Acsah as a wife."12And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.
When Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, captured it, Caleb gave him his daughter Acsah as a wife. 13And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.
One time Acsah came and charmed her father so she could ask him for some land. When she got down from her donkey, Caleb said to her, "What would you like?"14And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?
She answered, "Please give me a special present. Since you have given me land in the Negev, now give me springs of water." So Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs. 15And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.
Now the descendants of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the City of Date Palm Trees to Arad in the desert of Judah, located in the Negev. They went and lived with the people of Judah. 16And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
The men of Judah went with their brothers the men of Simeon and defeated the Canaanites living in Zephath. They wiped out Zephath. So people now call the city Hormah.17And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
The men of Judah captured Gaza, Ashkelon, Ekron, and the territory surrounding each of these cities. 18Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.
The LORD was with the men of Judah. They conquered the hill country, but they could not conquer the people living in the coastal plain, because they had chariots with iron-rimmed wheels.19And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
Caleb received Hebron, just as Moses had promised. He drove out the three Anakites.20And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.
The men of Benjamin, however, did not conquer the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. The Jebusites live with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this very day. 21And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
When the men of Joseph attacked Bethel, the LORD was with them.22And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.
When the men of Joseph spied out Bethel (it used to be called Luz),23And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)
the spies spotted a man leaving the city. They said to him, "If you show us a secret entrance into the city, we will reward you."24And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.
He showed them a secret entrance into the city, and they put the city to the sword. But they let the man and his extended family leave safely.25And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.
He moved to Hittite country and built a city. He named it Luz, and it has kept that name to this very day. 26And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.
The men of Manasseh did not conquer Beth Shan, Taanach, or their surrounding towns. Nor did they conquer the people living in Dor, Ibleam, Megiddo or their surrounding towns. The Canaanites managed to remain in those areas.27Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
Whenever Israel was strong militarily, they forced the Canaanites to do hard labor, but they never totally conquered them. 28And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
The men of Ephraim did not conquer the Canaanites living in Gezer. The Canaanites lived among them in Gezer. 29Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
The men of Zebulun did not conquer the people living in Kitron and Nahalol. The Canaanites lived among them and were forced to do hard labor. 30Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.
The men of Asher did not conquer the people living in Acco or Sidon, nor did they conquer Ahlab, Aczib, Helbah, Aphek, or Rehob.31Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:
The people of Asher live among the Canaanites residing in the land because they did not conquer them. 32But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.
The men of Naphtali did not conquer the people living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath. They live among the Canaanites residing in the land. The Canaanites living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were forced to do hard labor for them. 33Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.
The Amorites forced the people of Dan to live in the hill country. They did not allow them to live in the coastal plain.34And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:
The Amorites managed to remain in Har Heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim. Whenever the tribe of Joseph was strong militarily, the Amorites were forced to do hard labor.35But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.
The border of Amorite territory ran from the Scorpion Ascent to Sela and on up. 36And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
