| 1Who is this who comes from Edom, dressed in bright red, coming from Bozrah? Who is this one wearing royal attire, who marches confidently because of his great strength? "It is I, the one who announces vindication, and who is able to deliver!" | 1Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. |
| 2Why are your clothes red? Why do you look like someone who has stomped on grapes in a vat? | 2Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? |
| 3"I have stomped grapes in the winepress all by myself; no one from the nations joined me. I stomped on them in my anger; I trampled them down in my rage. Their juice splashed on my garments, and stained all my clothes. | 3I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. |
| 4For I looked forward to the day of vengeance, and then payback time arrived. | 4For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. |
| 5I looked, but there was no one to help; I was shocked because there was no one offering support. So my right arm accomplished deliverance; my raging anger drove me on. | 5And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. |
| 6I trampled nations in my anger, I made them drunk in my rage, I splashed their blood on the ground." | 6And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth. |
| 7I will tell of the faithful acts of the LORD, of the LORD's praiseworthy deeds. I will tell about all the LORD did for us, the many good things he did for the family of Israel, because of his compassion and great faithfulness. | 7I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses. |
| 8He said, "Certainly they will be my people, children who are not disloyal." He became their deliverer. | 8For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour. |
| 9Through all that they suffered, he suffered too. The messenger sent from his very presence delivered them. In his love and mercy he protected them; he lifted them up and carried them throughout ancient times. | 9In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old. |
| 10But they rebelled and offended his holy Spirit, so he turned into an enemy and fought against them. | 10But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them. |
| 11His people remembered the ancient times. Where is the one who brought them up out of the sea, along with the shepherd of his flock? Where is the one who placed his holy Spirit among them, | 11Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him? |
| 12the one who made his majestic power available to Moses, who divided the water before them, gaining for himself a lasting reputation, | 12That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name? |
| 13who led them through the deep water? Like a horse running on flat land they did not stumble. | 13That led them through the deep, as an horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble? |
| 14Like an animal that goes down into a valley to graze, so the Spirit of the LORD granted them rest. In this way you guided your people, gaining for yourself an honored reputation. | 14As a beast goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the LORD caused him to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name. |
| 15Look down from heaven and take notice, from your holy, majestic palace! Where are your zeal and power? Do not hold back your tender compassion! | 15Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where is thy zeal and thy strength, the sounding of thy bowels and of thy mercies toward me? are they restrained? |
| 16For you are our father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not recognize us. You, LORD, are our father; you have been called our protector from ancient times. | 16Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting. |
| 17Why, LORD, do you make us stray from your ways, and make our minds stubborn so that we do not obey you? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance! | 17O LORD, why hast thou made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants' sake, the tribes of thine inheritance. |
| 18For a short time your special nation possessed a land, but then our adversaries knocked down your holy sanctuary. | 18The people of thy holiness have possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary. |
| 19We existed from ancient times, but you did not rule over them, they were not your subjects. | 19We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name. |
