A well-written song by Asaph. Why, O God, have you permanently rejected us? Why does your anger burn against the sheep of your pasture? | 1A Maskil of Asaph. Why have You rejected us forever, God? Why does Your anger burn against the sheep of Your pasture? |
Remember your people whom you acquired in ancient times, whom you rescued so they could be your very own nation, as well as Mount Zion, where you dwell! | 2Remember Your congregation, which You purchased long ago and redeemed as the tribe for Your own possession. Remember Mount Zion where You dwell. |
Hurry and look at the permanent ruins, and all the damage the enemy has done to the temple! | 3Make Your way to the everlasting ruins, to all that the enemy has destroyed in the sanctuary. |
Your enemies roar in the middle of your sanctuary; they set up their battle flags. | 4Your adversaries roared in the meeting place where You met with us. They set up their emblems as signs. |
They invade like lumberjacks swinging their axes in a thick forest. | 5It was like men in a thicket of trees, wielding axes, |
And now they are tearing down all its engravings with axes and crowbars. | 6then smashing all the carvings with hatchets and picks. |
They set your sanctuary on fire; they desecrate your dwelling place by knocking it to the ground. | 7They set Your sanctuary on fire; they utterly desecrated the dwelling place of Your name. |
They say to themselves, "We will oppress all of them." They burn down all the places where people worship God in the land. | 8They said in their hearts," Let us oppress them relentlessly." They burned down every place throughout the land where God met with us. |
We do not see any signs of God's presence; there are no longer any prophets and we have no one to tell us how long this will last. | 9There are no signs for us to see. There is no longer a prophet. And none of us knows how long this will last. |
How long, O God, will the adversary hurl insults? Will the enemy blaspheme your name forever? | 10God, how long will the enemy mock? Will the foe insult Your name forever? |
Why do you remain inactive? Intervene and destroy him! | 11Why do You hold back Your hand? Stretch out Your right hand and destroy them! |
But God has been my king from ancient times, performing acts of deliverance on the earth. | 12God my King is from ancient times, performing saving acts on the earth. |
You destroyed the sea by your strength; you shattered the heads of the sea monster in the water. | 13You divided the sea with Your strength; You smashed the heads of the sea monsters in the waters; |
You crushed the heads of Leviathan; you fed him to the people who live along the coast. | 14You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You fed him to the creatures of the desert. |
You broke open the spring and the stream; you dried up perpetually flowing rivers. | 15You opened up springs and streams; You dried up ever-flowing rivers. |
You established the cycle of day and night; you put the moon and sun in place. | 16The day is Yours, also the night; You established the moon and the sun. |
You set up all the boundaries of the earth; you created the cycle of summer and winter. | 17You set all the boundaries of the earth; You made summer and winter. |
Remember how the enemy hurls insults, O LORD, and how a foolish nation blasphemes your name! | 18Remember this: the enemy has mocked Yahweh, and a foolish people has insulted Your name. |
Do not hand the life of your dove over to a wild animal! Do not continue to disregard the lives of your oppressed people! | 19Do not give the life of Your dove to beasts; do not forget the lives of Your poor people forever. |
Remember your covenant promises, for the dark regions of the earth are full of places where violence rules. | 20Consider the covenant, for the dark places of the land are full of violence. |
Do not let the afflicted be turned back in shame! Let the oppressed and poor praise your name! | 21Do not let the oppressed turn away in shame; let the poor and needy praise Your name. |
Rise up, O God! Defend your honor! Remember how fools insult you all day long! | 22Rise up, God, defend Your cause! Remember the insults that fools bring against You all day long. |
Do not disregard what your enemies say, or the unceasing shouts of those who defy you. | 23Do not forget the clamor of Your adversaries, the tumult of Your opponents that goes up constantly. |
