Now these are the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD your God instructed me to teach you so that you may carry them out in the land where you are headed | 1This is the command--the statutes and ordinances--the LORD your God has instructed me to teach you, so that you may follow them in the land you are about to enter and possess. |
and that you may so revere the LORD your God that you will keep all his statutes and commandments that I am giving you--you, your children, and your grandchildren--all your lives, to prolong your days. | 2Do this so that you may fear the LORD your God all the days of your life by keeping all His statutes and commands I am giving you, your son, and your grandson, and so that you may have a long life. |
Pay attention, Israel, and be careful to do this so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in number--as the LORD, God of your ancestors, said to you, you will have a land flowing with milk and honey. | 3Listen, Israel, and be careful to follow them, so that you may prosper and multiply greatly, because Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised you a land flowing with milk and honey." |
Listen, Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! | 4Listen, Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is One. |
You must love the LORD your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength. | 5Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. |
These words I am commanding you today must be kept in mind, | 6These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. |
and you must teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up. | 7Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. |
You should tie them as a reminder on your forearm and fasten them as symbols on your forehead. | 8Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. |
Inscribe them on the doorframes of your houses and gates. | 9Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates." |
Then when the LORD your God brings you to the land he promised your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give you--a land with large, fine cities you did not build, | 10When the LORD your God brings you into the land He swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob that He would give you--a land with large and beautiful cities that you did not build, |
houses filled with choice things you did not accumulate, hewn out cisterns you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant--and you eat your fill, | 11houses full of every good thing that you did not fill them with, wells dug that you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant--and when you eat and are satisfied, |
be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you out of Egypt, that place of slavery. | 12be careful not to forget the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery. |
You must revere the LORD your God, serve him, and take oaths using only his name. | 13Fear Yahweh your God, worship Him, and take your oaths in His name. |
You must not go after other gods, those of the surrounding peoples, | 14Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you, |
for the LORD your God, who is present among you, is a jealous God and his anger will erupt against you and remove you from the land. | 15for the LORD your God, who is among you, is a jealous God. Otherwise, the LORD your God will become angry with you and wipe you off the face of the earth. |
You must not put the LORD your God to the test as you did at Massah. | 16Do not test the LORD your God as you tested Him at Massah. |
Keep his commandments very carefully, as well as the stipulations and statutes he commanded you to observe. | 17Carefully observe the commands of the LORD your God, the decrees and statutes He has commanded you. |
Do whatever is proper and good before the LORD so that it may go well with you and that you may enter and occupy the good land that he promised your ancestors, | 18Do what is right and good in the LORD's sight, so that you may prosper and so that you may enter and possess the good land the LORD your God swore to give your fathers, |
and that you may drive out all your enemies just as the LORD said. | 19by driving out all your enemies before you, as the LORD has said." |
When your children ask you later on, "What are the stipulations, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD our God commanded you?" | 20When your son asks you in the future, 'What is the meaning of the decrees, statutes, and ordinances, which the LORD our God has commanded you?' |
you must say to them, "We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt in a powerful way. | 21tell him, 'We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand. |
And he brought signs and great, devastating wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on his whole family before our very eyes. | 22Before our eyes the LORD inflicted great and devastating signs and wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his household, |
He delivered us from there so that he could give us the land he had promised our ancestors. | 23but He brought us from there in order to lead us in and give us the land that He swore to our fathers. |
The LORD commanded us to obey all these statutes and to revere him so that it may always go well for us and he may preserve us, as he has to this day. | 24The LORD commanded us to follow all these statutes and to fear the LORD our God for our prosperity always and for our preservation, as it is today. |
We will be innocent if we carefully keep all these commandments before the LORD our God, just as he demands." | 25Righteousness will be ours if we are careful to follow every one of these commands before the LORD our God, as He has commanded us.'" |
