From Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are called, wrapped in the love of God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ. | 1Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who are called, loved by God the Father, and kept in Jesus Christ: |
May mercy, peace, and love be lavished on you! | 2Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. |
Dear friends, although I have been eager to write to you about our common salvation, I now feel compelled instead to write to encourage you to contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. | 3Beloved, although I made every effort to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt it necessary to write and urge you to contend earnestly for the faith entrusted once for all to the saints. |
For certain men have secretly slipped in among you--men who long ago were marked out for the condemnation I am about to describe--ungodly men who have turned the grace of our God into a license for evil and who deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. | 4For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—ungodly ones who were designated long ago for condemnation. They turn the grace of our God into a license for immorality, and they deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. |
Now I desire to remind you (even though you have been fully informed of these facts once for all) that Jesus, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, later destroyed those who did not believe. | 5Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you that after Jesus had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt, He destroyed those who did not believe. |
You also know that the angels who did not keep within their proper domain but abandoned their own place of residence, he has kept in eternal chains in utter darkness, locked up for the judgment of the great Day. | 6And the angels who did not stay within their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling—these He has kept in eternal chains under darkness, bound for judgment on that great day. |
So also Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring towns, since they indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire in a way similar to these angels, are now displayed as an example by suffering the punishment of eternal fire. | 7In like manner, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, who indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, are on display as an example of those who sustain the punishment of eternal fire. |
Yet these men, as a result of their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and insult the glorious ones. | 8Yet in the same way these dreamers defile their bodies, reject authority, and slander glorious beings. |
But even when Michael the archangel was arguing with the devil and debating with him concerning Moses' body, he did not dare to bring a slanderous judgment, but said, "May the Lord rebuke you!" | 9But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed with the devil over the body of Moses, did not presume to bring a slanderous charge against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” |
But these men do not understand the things they slander, and they are being destroyed by the very things that, like irrational animals, they instinctively comprehend. | 10These men, however, slander what they do not understand, and like irrational animals, they will be destroyed by the things they do instinctively. |
Woe to them! For they have traveled down Cain's path, and because of greed have abandoned themselves to Balaam's error; hence, they will certainly perish in Korah's rebellion. | 11Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain; they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam; they have perished in Korah’s rebellion. |
These men are dangerous reefs at your love feasts, feasting without reverence, feeding only themselves. They are waterless clouds, carried along by the winds; autumn trees without fruit--twice dead, uprooted; | 12These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts, shamelessly feasting with you but shepherding only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; fruitless trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted. |
wild sea waves, spewing out the foam of their shame; wayward stars for whom the utter depths of eternal darkness have been reserved. | 13They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever. |
Now Enoch, the seventh in descent beginning with Adam, even prophesied of them, saying, "Look! The Lord is coming with thousands and thousands of his holy ones, | 14Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about them: “Behold, the Lord is coming with myriads of His holy ones |
to execute judgment on all, and to convict every person of all their thoroughly ungodly deeds that they have committed, and of all the harsh words that ungodly sinners have spoken against him." | 15to execute judgment on everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of every ungodly act of wickedness and every harsh word spoken against Him by ungodly sinners.” |
These people are grumblers and fault-finders who go wherever their desires lead them, and they give bombastic speeches, enchanting folks for their own gain. | 16These men are discontented grumblers, following after their own lusts; their mouths spew arrogance; they flatter others for their own advantage. |
But you, dear friends--recall the predictions foretold by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 17But you, beloved, remember what was foretold by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ |
For they said to you, "In the end time there will come scoffers, propelled by their own ungodly desires." | 18when they said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow after their own ungodly desires.” |
These people are divisive, worldly, devoid of the Spirit. | 19These are the ones who cause divisions, who are worldly and devoid of the Spirit. |
But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith, by praying in the Holy Spirit, | 20But you, beloved, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, |
maintain yourselves in the love of God, while anticipating the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that brings eternal life. | 21keep yourselves in the love of God as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you eternal life. |
And have mercy on those who waver; | 22And indeed, have mercy on those who doubt; |
save others by snatching them out of the fire; have mercy on others, coupled with a fear of God, hating even the clothes stained by the flesh. | 23save others by snatching them from the fire; and to still others show mercy tempered with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh. |
Now to the one who is able to keep you from falling, and to cause you to stand, rejoicing, without blemish before his glorious presence, | 24Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished in His glorious presence, with great joy— |
to the only God our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time, and now, and for all eternity. Amen. | 25to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord before all time, and now, and for all eternity. Amen. |
