"Does not humanity have hard service on earth? Are not their days also like the days of a hired man? 1“Is not man consigned to labor on earth? Are not his days like those of a hired hand?
Like a servant longing for the evening shadow, and like a hired man looking for his wages, 2Like a slave he longs for shade; like a hireling he waits for his wages.
thus I have been made to inherit months of futility, and nights of sorrow have been appointed to me. 3So I am allotted months of futility, and nights of misery are appointed me.
If I lie down, I say, 'When will I arise?', and the night stretches on and I toss and turn restlessly until the day dawns. 4When I lie down I think: ‘When will I get up?’ But the night drags on, and I toss and turn until dawn.
My body is clothed with worms and dirty scabs; my skin is broken and festering. 5My flesh is clothed with worms and encrusted with dirt; my skin is cracked and festering.
My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle and they come to an end without hope. 6My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; they come to an end without hope.
Remember that my life is but a breath, that my eyes will never again see happiness. 7Remember that my life is but a breath. My eyes will never again see happiness.
The eye of him who sees me now will see me no more; your eyes will look for me, but I will be gone. 8The eye that beholds me will no longer see me. You will look for me, but I will be no more.
As a cloud is dispersed and then disappears, so the one who goes down to the grave does not come up again. 9As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come back up.
He returns no more to his house, nor does his place of residence know him any more. 10He never returns to his house; his place remembers him no more.
"Therefore, I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. 11Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
Am I the sea, or the creature of the deep, that you must put me under guard? 12Am I the sea, or the monster of the deep, that You must keep me under guard?
If I say, "My bed will comfort me, my couch will ease my complaint," 13When I think my bed will comfort me and my couch will ease my complaint,
then you scare me with dreams and terrify me with visions, 14then You frighten me with dreams and terrify me with visions,
so that I would prefer strangling, and death more than life. 15so that I would prefer strangling and death over my life in this body.
I loathe it; I do not want to live forever; leave me alone, for my days are a vapor! 16I loathe my life! I would not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath.
"What is mankind that you make so much of them, and that you pay attention to them? 17What is man that You should exalt him, that You should set Your heart upon him,
And that you visit them every morning, and try them every moment? 18that You attend to him every morning, and test him every moment?
Will you never look away from me, will you not let me alone long enough to swallow my spittle? 19Will You never look away from me, or leave me alone to swallow my spittle?
If I have sinned--what have I done to you, O watcher of men? Why have you set me as your target? Have I become a burden to you? 20If I have sinned, what have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your target, so that I am a burden to You?
And why do you not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? For now I will lie down in the dust, and you will seek me diligently, but I will be gone." 21Why do You not pardon my transgression and take away my iniquity? For soon I will lie down in the dust; You will seek me, but I will be no more.”
