New American Standard Bible 1995 | New Living Translation |
Then Joseph fell on his father's face, and wept over him and kissed him. | 1Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him. |
Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel. | 2Then Joseph told the physicians who served him to embalm his father’s body; so Jacob was embalmed. |
Now forty days were required for it, for such is the period required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days. | 3The embalming process took the usual forty days. And the Egyptians mourned his death for seventy days. |
When the days of mourning for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your sight, please speak to Pharaoh, saying, | 4When the period of mourning was over, Joseph approached Pharaoh’s advisers and said, “Please do me this favor and speak to Pharaoh on my behalf. |
'My father made me swear, saying, "Behold, I am about to die; in my grave which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me." Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.'" | 5Tell him that my father made me swear an oath. He said to me, ‘Listen, I am about to die. Take my body back to the land of Canaan, and bury me in the tomb I prepared for myself.’ So please allow me to go and bury my father. After his burial, I will return without delay.” |
Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear." | 6Pharaoh agreed to Joseph’s request. “Go and bury your father, as he made you promise,” he said. |
So Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt, | 7So Joseph went up to bury his father. He was accompanied by all of Pharaoh’s officials, all the senior members of Pharaoh’s household, and all the senior officers of Egypt. |
and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father's household; they left only their little ones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. | 8Joseph also took his entire household and his brothers and their households. But they left their little children and flocks and herds in the land of Goshen. |
There also went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company. | 9A great number of chariots and charioteers accompanied Joseph. |
When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and sorrowful lamentation; and he observed seven days mourning for his father. | 10When they arrived at the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan River, they held a very great and solemn memorial service, with a seven-day period of mourning for Joseph’s father. |
Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians." Therefore it was named Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan. | 11The local residents, the Canaanites, watched them mourning at the threshing floor of Atad. Then they renamed that place (which is near the Jordan) Abel-mizraim, for they said, “This is a place of deep mourning for these Egyptians.” |
Thus his sons did for him as he had charged them; | 12So Jacob’s sons did as he had commanded them. |
for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field for a burial site from Ephron the Hittite. | 13They carried his body to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre. This is the cave that Abraham had bought as a permanent burial site from Ephron the Hittite. Joseph Reassures His Brothers |
After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brothers, and all who had gone up with him to bury his father. | 14After burying Jacob, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had accompanied him to his father’s burial. |
When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph bears a grudge against us and pays us back in full for all the wrong which we did to him!" | 15But now that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers became fearful. “Now Joseph will show his anger and pay us back for all the wrong we did to him,” they said. |
So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father charged before he died, saying, | 16So they sent this message to Joseph: “Before your father died, he instructed us |
'Thus you shall say to Joseph, "Please forgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong."' And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father." And Joseph wept when they spoke to him. | 17to say to you: ‘Please forgive your brothers for the great wrong they did to you—for their sin in treating you so cruelly.’ So we, the servants of the God of your father, beg you to forgive our sin.” When Joseph received the message, he broke down and wept. |
Then his brothers also came and fell down before him and said, "Behold, we are your servants." | 18Then his brothers came and threw themselves down before Joseph. “Look, we are your slaves!” they said. |
But Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in God's place? | 19But Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you? |
"As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. | 20You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. |
"So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones." So he comforted them and spoke kindly to them. | 21No, don’t be afraid. I will continue to take care of you and your children.” So he reassured them by speaking kindly to them. The Death of Joseph |
Now Joseph stayed in Egypt, he and his father's household, and Joseph lived one hundred and ten years. | 22So Joseph and his brothers and their families continued to live in Egypt. Joseph lived to the age of 110. |
Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's sons; also the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph's knees. | 23He lived to see three generations of descendants of his son Ephraim, and he lived to see the birth of the children of Manasseh’s son Makir, whom he claimed as his own. |
Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die, but God will surely take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob." | 24“Soon I will die,” Joseph told his brothers, “but God will surely come to help you and lead you out of this land of Egypt. He will bring you back to the land he solemnly promised to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” |
Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, "God will surely take care of you, and you shall carry my bones up from here." | 25Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath, and he said, “When God comes to help you and lead you back, you must take my bones with you.” |
So Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years; and he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt. | 26So Joseph died at the age of 110. The Egyptians embalmed him, and his body was placed in a coffin in Egypt. |
