Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, including the overseers and deacons: | 1Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all God's holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons: |
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. | 2Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. |
I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, | 3I thank my God every time I remember you. |
always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, | 4In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy |
in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. | 5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, |
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. | 6being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. |
For it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I have you in my heart, since both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of grace with me. | 7It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God's grace with me. |
For God is my witness, how I long for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. | 8God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. |
And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, | 9And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, |
so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; | 10so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, |
having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. | 11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ--to the glory and praise of God. |
Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel, | 12Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. |
so that my imprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the whole praetorian guard and to everyone else, | 13As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. |
and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear. | 14And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear. |
Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will; | 15It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. |
the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; | 16The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. |
the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment. | 17The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. |
What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice, | 18But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, |
for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, | 19for I know that through your prayers and God's provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. |
according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but that with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. | 20I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. |
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. | 21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. |
But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. | 22If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! |
But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; | 23I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; |
yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. | 24but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. |
Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, | 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, |
so that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again. | 26so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me. |
Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; | 27Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel |
in no way alarmed by your opponents-- which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that too, from God. | 28without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved--and that by God. |
For to you it has been granted for Christ's sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake, | 29For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, |
experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear to be in me. | 30since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have. |
