Job 31
NASB Parallel NET [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New American Standard Bible 1995NET Bible
"I have made a covenant with my eyes; How then could I gaze at a virgin?1"I made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I entertain thoughts against a virgin?
"And what is the portion of God from above Or the heritage of the Almighty from on high?2What then would be one's lot from God above, one's heritage from the Almighty on high?
"Is it not calamity to the unjust And disaster to those who work iniquity?3Is it not misfortune for the unjust, and disaster for those who work iniquity?
"Does He not see my ways And number all my steps?4Does he not see my ways and count all my steps?
"If I have walked with falsehood, And my foot has hastened after deceit,5If I have walked in falsehood, and if my foot has hastened to deceit--
Let Him weigh me with accurate scales, And let God know my integrity.6let him weigh me with honest scales; then God will discover my integrity.
"If my step has turned from the way, Or my heart followed my eyes, Or if any spot has stuck to my hands,7If my footsteps have strayed from the way, if my heart has gone after my eyes, or if anything has defiled my hands,
Let me sow and another eat, And let my crops be uprooted.8then let me sow and let another eat, and let my crops be uprooted.
"If my heart has been enticed by a woman, Or I have lurked at my neighbor's doorway,9If my heart has been enticed by a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door,
May my wife grind for another, And let others kneel down over her.10then let my wife turn the millstone for another man, and may other men have sexual relations with her.
"For that would be a lustful crime; Moreover, it would be an iniquity punishable by judges.11For I would have committed a shameful act, an iniquity to be judged.
"For it would be fire that consumes to Abaddon, And would uproot all my increase.12For it is a fire that devours even to Destruction, and it would uproot all my harvest.
"If I have despised the claim of my male or female slaves When they filed a complaint against me,13"If I have disregarded the right of my male servants or my female servants when they disputed with me,
What then could I do when God arises? And when He calls me to account, what will I answer Him?14then what will I do when God confronts me in judgment; when he intervenes, how will I respond to him?
"Did not He who made me in the womb make him, And the same one fashion us in the womb?15Did not the one who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us in the womb?
"If I have kept the poor from their desire, Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,16If I have refused to give the poor what they desired, or caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
Or have eaten my morsel alone, And the orphan has not shared it17If I ate my morsel of bread myself, and did not share any of it with orphans--
(But from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, And from infancy I guided her),18but from my youth I raised the orphan like a father, and from my mother's womb I guided the widow!
If I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing, Or that the needy had no covering,19If I have seen anyone about to perish for lack of clothing, or a poor man without a coat,
If his loins have not thanked me, And if he has not been warmed with the fleece of my sheep,20whose heart did not bless me as he warmed himself with the fleece of my sheep,
If I have lifted up my hand against the orphan, Because I saw I had support in the gate,21if I have raised my hand to vote against the orphan, when I saw my support in the court,
Let my shoulder fall from the socket, And my arm be broken off at the elbow.22then let my arm fall from the shoulder, let my arm be broken off at the socket.
"For calamity from God is a terror to me, And because of His majesty I can do nothing.23For the calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his majesty I was powerless.
"If I have put my confidence in gold, And called fine gold my trust,24"If I have put my confidence in gold or said to pure gold, 'You are my security!'
If I have gloated because my wealth was great, And because my hand had secured so much;25if I have rejoiced because of the extent of my wealth, or because of the great wealth my hand had gained,
If I have looked at the sun when it shone Or the moon going in splendor,26if I looked at the sun when it was shining, and the moon advancing as a precious thing,
And my heart became secretly enticed, And my hand threw a kiss from my mouth,27so that my heart was secretly enticed, and my hand threw them a kiss from my mouth,
That too would have been an iniquity calling for judgment, For I would have denied God above.28then this also would be iniquity to be judged, for I would have been false to God above.
"Have I rejoiced at the extinction of my enemy, Or exulted when evil befell him?29If I have rejoiced over the misfortune of my enemy or exulted because calamity found him--
"No, I have not allowed my mouth to sin By asking for his life in a curse.30I have not even permitted my mouth to sin by asking for his life through a curse--
"Have the men of my tent not said, 'Who can find one who has not been satisfied with his meat '?31if the members of my household have never said, 'If only there were someone who has not been satisfied from Job's meat!'--
"The alien has not lodged outside, For I have opened my doors to the traveler.32But no stranger had to spend the night outside, for I opened my doors to the traveler--
"Have I covered my transgressions like Adam, By hiding my iniquity in my bosom,33if I have covered my transgressions as men do, by hiding iniquity in my heart,
Because I feared the great multitude, And the contempt of families terrified me, And kept silent and did not go out of doors?34because I was terrified of the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I remained silent and would not go outdoors--
"Oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature; Let the Almighty answer me! And the indictment which my adversary has written,35"If only I had someone to hear me! Here is my signature--let the Almighty answer me! If only I had an indictment that my accuser had written.
Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, I would bind it to myself like a crown.36Surely I would wear it proudly on my shoulder, I would bind it on me like a crown;
"I would declare to Him the number of my steps; Like a prince I would approach Him.37I would give him an accounting of my steps; like a prince I would approach him.
"If my land cries out against me, And its furrows weep together;38"If my land cried out against me and all its furrows wept together,
If I have eaten its fruit without money, Or have caused its owners to lose their lives,39if I have eaten its produce without paying, or caused the death of its owners,
Let briars grow instead of wheat, And stinkweed instead of barley." The words of Job are ended.40then let thorns sprout up in place of wheat, and in place of barley, weeds!" The words of Job are ended.
