God, do not rest! Don't be silent! Don't stay inactive, God! | 1A song. A psalm of Asaph. O God, do not remain silent; do not turn a deaf ear, do not stand aloof, O God. |
See! Your enemies rage; those who hate you issue threats. | 2See how your enemies growl, how your foes rear their heads. |
They plot against your people and conspire against your cherished ones. | 3With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish. |
They say, "Let us go and erase them as a nation so the name of Israel will not be remembered anymore." | 4"Come," they say, "let us destroy them as a nation, so that Israel's name is remembered no more." |
Indeed, they shrewdly planned together, forming an alliance against you— | 5With one mind they plot together; they form an alliance against you-- |
the tents of Edom, the Ishmaelites, Moab, the Hagrites, | 6the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, of Moab and the Hagrites, |
Gebal, Ammon, Amalek, Philistia, and the inhabitants of Tyre. | 7Byblos, Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, with the people of Tyre. |
Even Assyria joined them to strengthen the descendants of Lot. Interlude | 8Even Assyria has joined them to reinforce Lot's descendants. |
Deal with them as you did to Midian, Sisera, and Jabin at the Kishon Brook. | 9Do to them as you did to Midian, as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon, |
They were destroyed at En-dor and became as dung on the ground. | 10who perished at Endor and became like dung on the ground. |
Punish their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, | 11Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, |
who said, "Let us possess the pastures of God." | 12who said, "Let us take possession of the pasturelands of God." |
God, set them up like dried thistles, like straw before the wind. | 13Make them like tumbleweed, my God, like chaff before the wind. |
Like a fire burning a forest, and a flame setting mountains ablaze. | 14As fire consumes the forest or a flame sets the mountains ablaze, |
Pursue them with your storm and terrify them with your whirlwind. | 15so pursue them with your tempest and terrify them with your storm. |
Fill their faces with shame until they seek your name, God. | 16Cover their faces with shame, LORD, so that they will seek your name. |
Let them be humiliated and terrified permanently until they die in shame. | 17May they ever be ashamed and dismayed; may they perish in disgrace. |
Then they will know that you alone— whose name is LORD— are the Most High over all the earth. | 18Let them know that you, whose name is the LORD-- that you alone are the Most High over all the earth. |
