Later on, Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. This is what happened: 1After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. Now this is how he did so.
Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathaniel from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two of his other disciples were together. 2Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael (who was from Cana in Galilee), the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples of his were together.
Simon Peter told them, "I'm going fishing." They all told him, "We'll go with you, too." So they went out and got into the boat but didn't catch a thing that night.3Simon Peter told them, "I am going fishing." "We will go with you," they replied. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
Just as dawn was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore. The disciples didn't realize it was Jesus. 4When it was already very early morning, Jesus stood on the beach, but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
Jesus asked them, "Children, you don't have any fish, do you?" They answered him, "No."5So Jesus said to them, "Children, you don't have any fish, do you?" They replied, "No."
He told them, "Throw the net on the right hand side of the boat, and you'll catch some." So they threw it out and were unable to haul it in because it was so full of fish.6He told them, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they threw the net, and were not able to pull it in because of the large number of fish.
That disciple whom Jesus kept loving told Peter, "It's the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his clothes back on, because he was practically naked, and jumped into the sea. 7Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" So Simon Peter, when he heard that it was the Lord, tucked in his outer garment (for he had nothing on underneath it), and plunged into the sea.
But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish. They were only about 200 cubits away from the shore.8Meanwhile the other disciples came with the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from land, only about a hundred yards.
When they arrived at the shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish lying on it, and some bread. 9When they got out on the beach, they saw a charcoal fire ready with a fish placed on it, and bread.
Jesus told them, "Bring me some of the fish you've just caught." 10Jesus said, "Bring some of the fish you have just now caught."
So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish—153 of them. And although there were so many of them, the net was not torn.11So Simon Peter went aboard and pulled the net to shore. It was full of large fish, one hundred fifty-three, but although there were so many, the net was not torn.
Then Jesus told them, "Come, have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?", because they knew it was the Lord. 12"Come, have breakfast," Jesus said. But none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they knew it was the Lord.
Jesus took the bread, gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.
This was now the third time that Jesus revealed himself to the disciples after he had been raised from the dead.14This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" Peter told him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus told him, "Feed my lambs."15Then when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these do?" He replied, "Yes, Lord, you know I love you." Jesus told him, "Feed my lambs."
Then he asked him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter told him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus told him, "Take care of my sheep." 16Jesus said a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He replied, "Yes, Lord, you know I love you." Jesus told him, "Shepherd my sheep."
He asked him a third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was deeply hurt that he had asked him a third time, "Do you love me?" So he told him, "Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you!" Jesus told him, "Feed my sheep. 17Jesus said a third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that Jesus asked him a third time, "Do you love me?" and said, "Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you." Jesus replied, "Feed my sheep.
"Truly, I tell you emphatically, when you were young, you would fasten your belt and go wherever you liked. But when you get old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten your belt and take you where you don't want to go." 18I tell you the solemn truth, when you were young, you tied your clothes around you and went wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will tie you up and bring you where you do not want to go."
Now he said this to show by what kind of death he would glorify God. After saying this, Jesus told him, "Keep following me."19(Now Jesus said this to indicate clearly by what kind of death Peter was going to glorify God.) After he said this, Jesus told Peter, "Follow me."
Peter turned around and noticed the disciple whom Jesus kept loving following them. He was the one who had put his head on Jesus' chest at the supper and had asked, "Lord, who is the one who is going to betray you?"20Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them. (This was the disciple who had leaned back against Jesus' chest at the meal and asked, "Lord, who is the one who is going to betray you?")
When Peter saw him, he said, "Lord, what about him?"21So when Peter saw him, he asked Jesus, "Lord, what about him?"
Jesus told him, "If it's my will for him to remain until I come back, how does that concern you? You must keep following me!" 22Jesus replied, "If I want him to live until I come back, what concern is that of yours? You follow me!"
So the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple wasn't going to die. Yet Jesus didn't say to Peter that he wasn't going to die, but, "If it's my will for him to remain until I come back, how does that concern you?"23So the saying circulated among the brothers and sisters that this disciple was not going to die. But Jesus did not say to him that he was not going to die, but rather, "If I want him to live until I come back, what concern is that of yours?"
This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and has written them down. We know that his testimony is true.24This is the disciple who testifies about these things and has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
Of course, Jesus also did many other things, and I suppose that if every one of them were written down, the world couldn't contain the books that would be written.25There are many other things that Jesus did. If every one of them were written down, I suppose the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.
