At the beginning of year 25 of our captivity, on the tenth day of the fourteenth year after the destruction of Jerusalem —on that very day—the LORD grabbed me in his hand and took me there. 1In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after the city was struck down, on this very day, the hand of the LORD was on me, and he brought me there.
God brought me in a series of visions to the land of Israel and placed me on top of a very high mountain, where to the south there was something that looked like the outline of a city. 2By means of divine visions he brought me to the land of Israel and placed me on a very high mountain, and on it was a structure like a city, to the south.
That's where he took me. All of a sudden, there was a man whose appearance resembled glowing bronze! He had a measuring reed and line in his hand as he stood in the city gate. 3When he brought me there, I saw a man whose appearance was like bronze, with a linen cord and a measuring stick in his hand. He was standing in the gateway.
This is what the man told me: "Son of Man, watch carefully, listen closely, and remember everything I'm going to be showing you, because you've been brought here to be shown what you're about to see. Be sure that you tell the house of Israel everything that you observe."4The man said to me, "Son of man, watch closely, listen carefully, and pay attention to everything I show you, for you have been brought here so that I can show it to you. Tell the house of Israel everything you see."
All of a sudden, we were at the exterior wall that completely surrounded the Temple. The man whom I had observed held a measuring reed that was six cubits long as measured in cubits that were a cubit and a handbreadth long. As he measured the thickness of the wall, he measured out one reed. Its height was also one reed.5I saw a wall all around the outside of the temple. In the man's hand was a measuring stick 10 1/2 feet long. He measured the thickness of the wall as 10 1/2 feet, and its height as 10 1/2 feet.
Then he went over to the gate that faced toward the east, ascended its steps, and measured its thresholds. One threshold measured one reed and the other one measured one reed.6Then he went to the gate facing east. He climbed its steps and measured the threshold of the gate as 10 1/2 feet deep.
Each guardhouse measured one reed long and one reed wide, and the distance between each guardhouse was five cubits. The threshold of the gate near the vestibule facing away from the Temple entrance measured one reed. 7The alcoves were 10 1/2 feet long and 10 1/2 feet wide; between the alcoves were 8 3/4 feet. The threshold of the gate by the porch of the gate facing inward was 10 1/2 feet.
Next, he measured the vestibule of the gate facing away from the Temple entrance at one reed.8Then he measured the porch of the gate facing inward as 10 1/2 feet.
He measured the vestibule of the gate inside at eight cubits and the doorjambs at two cubits. (The vestibule at the gate faced away from the Temple.) 9He measured the porch of the gate as 14 feet, and its jambs as 3 1/2 feet; the porch of the gate faced inward.
Gate guardhouses stood facing east, numbering three on each side, each of them of equal size to the door jamb; that is, having the same measurement on each side.10There were three alcoves on each side of the east gate; the three had the same measurement, and the jambs on either side had the same measurement.
He measured the width of the gateway at ten cubits, and the length of the gate at thirteen cubits. 11He measured the width of the entrance of the gateway as 17 1/2 feet, and the length of the gateway as 22 3/4 feet.
The retaining wall in front of the guardhouses measured one cubit wide. It stood one cubit from the wall to the guardhouses, which were six cubits square.12There was a barrier in front of the alcoves, 1 3/4 feet on either side; the alcoves were 10 1/2 feet on either side.
He measured the gate from the roof of the guardhouses to the roof of another at 25 cubits from doorway to opposite doorway. 13He measured the gateway from the roof of one alcove to the roof of the other, a width of 43 3/4 feet from one entrance to the opposite one.
Then he measured the open air porch at 60 cubits from the doorjamb of the courtyard that encompassed the gate. 14He measured the porch at 105 feet high; the gateway went all around to the jamb of the courtyard.
The distance from the front entrance gate to the vestibule of the inner gate measured 50 cubits.15From the front of the entrance gate to the porch of the inner gate was 87 1/2 feet.
Latticed windows faced the guardhouses, their side pillars within the gate all around, and also for the porches. Windows were placed all around inside, and the side pillars were engraved with palm trees.16There were closed windows toward the alcoves and toward their jambs within the gate all around, and likewise for the porches. There were windows all around the inside, and on each jamb were decorative palm trees.
Next, he brought me into the outer court, where chambers and a paved area had been constructed all around the courtyard, with 30 chambers facing the pavement. 17Then he brought me to the outer court. I saw chambers there, and a pavement made for the court all around; thirty chambers faced the pavement.
The pavement to the side of the gates corresponded to the length of the gates. 18The pavement was beside the gates, corresponding to the length of the gates; this was the lower pavement.
He also measured the width from the front lower gate to the front of the exterior inner court at 100 cubits to the east and to the north.19Then he measured the width from before the lower gate to the front of the exterior of the inner court as 175 feet on the east and on the north.
Next, he measured the length and width of the outer north-facing gate to the courtyard. 20He measured the length and width of the gate of the outer court which faces north.
It was equipped with three guardhouses on each side. Its side pillars and porches had measurements identical to the first gate: 50 cubits long and 25 cubits wide. 21Its alcoves, three on each side, and its jambs and porches had the same measurement as the first gate; 87 1/2 feet long and 43 3/4 feet wide.
Its windows, porches, and palm tree ornaments had measurements identical to the east-facing gate. Reached by seven ascending steps, its porch lay to the front of the steps. 22Its windows, its porches, and its decorative palm trees had the same measurement as the gate which faced east. Seven steps led up to it, and its porch was in front of them.
From a gate that stood opposite the northern gate he measured 100 cubits, as well as from the eastern gate.23Opposite the gate on the north and the east was a gate of the inner court; he measured the distance from gate to gate at 175 feet.
Then he led me toward the south, where there was a gate with side pillar and porch measurements identical to the others. 24Then he led me toward the south. I saw a gate on the south. He measured its jambs and its porches; they had the same dimensions as the others.
The gate and its porches contained windows all around, identical to the other windows. The length of the porch was 50 cubits and its width was 25 cubits.25There were windows all around it and its porches, like the windows of the others; 87 1/2 feet long and 43 3/4 feet wide.
Seven steps led up to it, with a porch in front of them. Palm tree ornaments were engraved on its side pillars, one on each side. 26There were seven steps going up to it; its porches were in front of them. It had decorative palm trees on its jambs, one on either side.
The inner court contained a south-facing gate measuring 100 cubits from gate to gate toward the south.27The inner court had a gate toward the south; he measured it from gate to gate toward the south as 175 feet.
Next, he brought me to the inner courtyard by way of the south-facing gate. He measured the south-facing gate as having measurements identical to the others. 28Then he brought me to the inner court by the south gate. He measured the south gate; it had the same dimensions as the others.
The measurements of its guardhouses, its side pillars, and its porches were identical to the others. The gate and its porches contained windows all around. The length of the porch was 50 cubits and its width was 25 cubits.29Its alcoves, its jambs, and its porches had the same dimensions as the others, and there were windows all around it and its porches; its length was 87 1/2 feet and its width 43 3/4 feet.
Porches lay all around, measuring 25 cubits long and five cubits wide, 30There were porches all around, 43 3/4 feet long and 8 3/4 feet wide.
leading to the outer courtyard. Palm tree ornaments were engraved on its side pillars. The stairway leading to it contained eight steps.31Its porches faced the outer court, and decorative palm trees were on its jambs, and its stairway had eight steps.
Then he brought me into the inner east-facing courtyard, where he measured the gate, identical to the others. 32Then he brought me to the inner court on the east side. He measured the gate; it had the same dimensions as the others.
The measurement of its guardhouses, side pillars, and porches was identical to the others. The gate and its porches contained windows all around. The length of the porch was 50 cubits and its width was 25 cubits,33Its alcoves, its jambs, and its porches had the same dimensions as the others, and there were windows all around it and its porches; its length was 87 1/2 feet and its width 43 3/4 feet.
leading to the outer courtyard. Palm tree ornaments were engraved on its side pillars. The stairway leading to it contained eight steps.34Its porches faced the outer court, it had decorative palm trees on its jambs, and its stairway had eight steps.
Next, he brought me to the north-facing gate, where he measured the gate, identical to the others. 35Then he brought me to the north gate, and he measured it; it had the same dimensions as the others--
The measurement of its guardhouses, side pillars, and porches was identical to the others. The gate and its porches contained windows all around. The length of the porch was 50 cubits and its width was 25 cubits,36its alcoves, its jambs, and its porches. It had windows all around it; its length was 87 1/2 feet and its width 43 3/4 feet.
leading to the outer courtyard. Palm tree ornaments were engraved on its side pillars. The stairway leading to it contained eight steps. 37Its jambs faced the outer court, and it had decorative palm trees on its jambs, on either side, and its stairway had eight steps.
There was a chamber with a doorway by the side pillars next to the gate where they prepare the burnt offerings.38There was a chamber with its door by the porch of the gate; there they washed the burnt offering.
In the porch leading in front of the gate there were two tables on either side for slaughtering burnt offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings, 39In the porch of the gate were two tables on either side on which to slaughter the burnt offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering.
and on the outer side, approaching the northern gateway, there were two tables, as well as two tables on the opposite side of the porch in front of the gate. 40On the outside of the porch as one goes up at the entrance of the north gate were two tables, and on the other side of the porch of the gate were two tables.
In that way, there were four tables on each side in front of the gate, for a total of eight tables for use in slaughtering the offerings. 41Four tables were on each side of the gate, eight tables on which the sacrifices were to be slaughtered.
There were four tables carved from stone for the burnt offering, each one and a half cubits long, one and a half cubits wide, and one cubit high, on which the instruments are laid for slaughtering burnt offerings and sacrifices. 42The four tables for the burnt offering were of carved stone, 32 inches long, 32 inches wide, and 21 inches high. They would put the instruments which they used to slaughter the burnt offering and the sacrifice on them.
Double hooks, a single handbreadth in length, were installed all around in this portion of the temple area.43There were hooks three inches long, fastened in the house all around, and on the tables was the flesh of the offering.
From outside leading into the inner gate there were chambers for the choir. One was beside the north gate facing the south, and another was at the south gate facing the north. 44On the outside of the inner gate were chambers for the singers of the inner court, one at the side of the north gate facing south, and the other at the side of the south gate facing north.
The angel told me, "This south-facing chamber is for the priests who maintain the Temple, 45He said to me, "This chamber which faces south is for the priests who keep charge of the temple,
and the north-facing chamber is for the priests who maintain the altar. These are Zadok's descendants, who, as descendants of Levi approach the LORD to minister directly to him." 46and the chamber which faces north is for the priests who keep charge of the altar. These are the descendants of Zadok, from the descendants of Levi, who may approach the LORD to minister to him."
He measured the court in the form of a square at 100 cubits long and 100 cubits wide. The altar stood in front of the Temple.47He measured the court as a square 175 feet long and 175 feet wide; the altar was in front of the temple.
Next, he brought me to the Temple porch and measured the side pillars at five cubits on each side. The width of the gate measured three cubits on each side. 48Then he brought me to the porch of the temple and measured the jambs of the porch as 8 3/4 feet on either side, and the width of the gate was 24 1/2 feet and the sides were 5¼ feet on each side.
The porch was 20 cubits long and eleven cubits wide. The stairway by which it was ascended was equipped with columns attached to its side pillars, one on each side.49The length of the porch was 35 feet and the width 19¼ feet; steps led up to it, and there were pillars beside the jambs on either side.
