On the first day of the week, early in the morning and while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and noticed that the stone had been removed from the tomb. | 1On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. |
So she ran off and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus kept loving. She told them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!" | 2So she ran to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put Him!" |
So Peter and the other disciple took off for the tomb. | 3At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. |
The two of them were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and came to the tomb first. | 4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first. |
Bending over to look inside, he noticed the linen cloths lying there, but didn't go in. | 5Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, yet he did not go in. |
At this point Simon Peter arrived, following him, and went straight into the tomb. He observed that the linen cloths were lying there, | 6Then, following him, Simon Peter came also. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there. |
and that the handkerchief that had been on Jesus' head was not lying with the linen cloths but was rolled up in a separate place. | 7The wrapping that had been on His head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself. |
Then the other disciple, who arrived at the tomb first, went inside, looked, and believed. | 8The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then entered the tomb, saw, and believed. |
For they did not yet understand the Scripture that said that Jesus had to rise from the dead. | 9For they still did not understand the Scripture that He must rise from the dead. |
So the disciples went back to their homes. | 10Then the disciples went home again. |
Meanwhile, Mary stood crying outside the tomb. As she cried, she bent over and looked into the tomb. | 11But Mary stood outside facing the tomb, crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb. |
She saw two angels in white clothes who were sitting down, one at the head and the other at the foot of the place where Jesus' body had been lying. | 12She saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where Jesus' body had been lying. |
They asked her, "Lady, why are you crying?" She told them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don't know where they have put him." | 13They said to her, "Woman, why are you crying?"" Because they've taken away my Lord," she told them, "and I don't know where they've put Him." |
After she had said this, she turned around and noticed Jesus standing there, without realizing that it was Jesus. | 14Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not know it was Jesus. |
Jesus asked her, "Dear lady, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she told him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away." | 15"Woman," Jesus said to her, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Supposing He was the gardener, she replied, "Sir, if you've removed Him, tell me where you've put Him, and I will take Him away." |
Jesus told her, "Mary!" She turned around and told him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!" (which means "Teacher"). | 16Jesus said, "Mary." Turning around, she said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!"--which means "Teacher." |
Jesus told her, "Don't hold on to me, because I haven't yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I'm ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" | 17"Don't cling to Me," Jesus told her, "for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to My brothers and tell them that I am ascending to My Father and your Father--to My God and your God." |
So Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I've seen the Lord!" She also told them what he had told her. | 18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them what He had said to her. |
It was the evening of the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them. He told them, "Peace be with you." | 19In the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because of their fear of the Jews. Then Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, "Peace to you!" |
After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side, and when they saw the Lord, the disciples were overjoyed. | 20Having said this, He showed them His hands and His side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. |
Jesus told them again, "Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, so I am sending you." | 21Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." |
When he had said this, he breathed on them and told them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. | 22After saying this, He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. |
If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven. If you retain people's sins, they are retained." | 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." |
Thomas, one of the Twelve (called the Twin), wasn't with them when Jesus came. | 24But one of the Twelve, Thomas (called "Twin"), was not with them when Jesus came. |
So the other disciples kept telling him, "We've seen the Lord!" But he told them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my finger into them, and put my hand into his side, I'll never believe!" | 25So the other disciples kept telling him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "If I don't see the mark of the nails in His hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe!" |
A week later, his disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were shut, Jesus came, stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you." | 26After eight days His disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, "Peace to you!" |
Then he told Thomas, "Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Take your hand, and put it into my side. Stop doubting, but believe." | 27Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and observe My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Don't be an unbeliever, but a believer." |
Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!" | 28Thomas responded to Him, "My Lord and my God!" |
Jesus told him, "Is it because you've seen me that you have believed? How blessed are those who have never seen me and yet have believed!" | 29Jesus said, "Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Those who believe without seeing are blessed." |
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not recorded in this book. | 30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples that are not written in this book. |
But these have been recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and so that through believing you may have life in his name. | 31But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His name. |
