Abram's wife Sarai had not borne any children for him, but she owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar. 1Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar;
Sarai said to Abram, "Since the LORD has prevented me from bearing children, go to my slave; perhaps through her I can build a family." And Abram agreed to what Sarai said.2so she said to Abram, "The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her." Abram agreed to what Sarai said.
So Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar, her Egyptian slave, and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife for him. This happened after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan 10 years. 3So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife.
He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When she realized that she was pregnant, she treated her mistress with contempt. 4He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.
Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for my suffering! I put my slave in your arms, and ever since she saw that she was pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between me and you." 5Then Sarai said to Abram, "You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me."
Abram replied to Sarai, "Here, your slave is in your hands; do whatever you want with her." Then Sarai mistreated her so much that she ran away from her. 6"Your slave is in your hands," Abram said. "Do with her whatever you think best." Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her.
The Angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. 7The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.
He said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She replied, "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai." 8And he said, "Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?" "I'm running away from my mistress Sarai," she answered.
Then the Angel of the LORD said to her, "You must go back to your mistress and submit to her mistreatment."9Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to your mistress and submit to her."
The Angel of the LORD also said to her, "I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count." 10The angel added, "I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count."
Then the Angel of the LORD said to her: You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction. 11The angel of the LORD also said to her: "You are now pregnant and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of your misery.
This man will be like a wild donkey. His hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him; he will live at odds with all his brothers. 12He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers."
So she called the LORD who spoke to her: The God Who Sees, for she said, "In this place, have I actually seen the One who sees me?"13She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me."
That is why she named the spring, "A Well of the Living One Who Sees Me." It is located between Kadesh and Bered. 14That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.
So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son Hagar had. 15So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne.
Abram was 86 years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.
