The word of the LORD came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month: "1In the ninth year, in the tenth month, and on the tenth day of the month, this message came to me from the LORD:
Son of man, write down today's date, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem this very day.2"Son of Man, write down the name of this day, this very day. The king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem on this very day.
Now speak a parable to the rebellious house. Tell them: This is what the Lord GOD says: Put the pot on the fire-- put it on, and then pour water into it! 3So compose a parable for the rebellious house. Tell them, 'This is what the Lord God says: "Prepare your pot for boiling! Set it in place. Fill it up with water, too.
Place the pieces of meat in it, every good piece-- thigh and shoulder. Fill it with choice bones. 4Gather together the best pieces of meat on it— including the thighs and the shoulders— and fill it with the choicest bones.
Take the choicest of the flock and also pile up the fuel under it. Bring it to a boil and cook the bones in it." 5Take the best bones from the flock, pile wood under the pot for the bones, bring it to a boil, and then cook the bones in it."'"
Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: Woe to the city of bloodshed, the pot that has rust inside it, and whose rust will not come off! Empty it piece by piece; lots should not be cast for its contents. 6"This is what the Lord GOD says: 'How terrible it is for that blood-filled city, to the pot whose rust remains in it, whose rust won't come off. Empty it one piece at a time. Don't let a lot fall on it.
For the blood she shed is still within her. She put it out on the bare rock; she didn't pour it on the ground to cover it with dust. 7Her blood was in it. She poured it out onto bare rock. She didn't pour it out on the ground, intending to cover it with dirt.
In order to stir up wrath and take vengeance, I have put her blood on the bare rock, so that it would not be covered. 8In order to stir up my anger and in order to take vengeance, I set the blood on a bare rock so that it cannot be covered.'
Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: Woe to the city of bloodshed! I Myself will make the pile of kindling large. 9"Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: 'How terrible it is for that blood-filled city— I'm also going to add to my pile of kindling.
Pile on the logs and kindle the fire! Cook the meat well and mix in the spices! Let the bones be burned! 10Pile up the wood! Make the fire burn hot. Boil the meat! Mix the seasonings. Burn those bones to a crisp!
Set the empty pot on its coals so that it becomes hot and its copper glows. Then its impurity will melt inside it; its rust will be consumed. 11Make the pot stand empty on the coals until its bronze glows red, its rust can be scoured off, and its dross completely removed.
It has frustrated every effort; its thick rust will not come off. Into the fire with its rust! 12The pot wearies me, but its thick rust won't come off, even with fire.
Because of the indecency of your uncleanness-- since I tried to purify you, but you would not be purified from your uncleanness-- you will not be pure again until I have satisfied My wrath on you. 13There is wickedness in your obscene conduct. Even though I've cleansed you, you uncleanness cannot be washed away. You cannot be cleansed again until my rage against you has subsided.'
I, Yahweh, have spoken. It is coming, and I will do it! I will not refrain, I will not show pity, and I will not relent. I will judge you according to your ways and deeds. This is the declaration of the Lord GOD. 14"'I, the LORD have spoken. It will happen, because I'm going to do it. I won't hold back, have compassion, or change my mind. They'll judge you according to your ways and deeds,' declares the Lord GOD."
Then the word of the LORD came to me: "15This message came to me from the LORD:
Son of man, I am about to take the delight of your eyes away from you with a fatal blow. But you must not lament or weep or let your tears flow.16"Son of Man, pay attention! I'm about to take away your most precious treasure with a single, fatal stroke, but you are not to mourn, weep, nor even let tears well up in your eyes.
Groan quietly; do not observe mourning rites for the dead. Put on your turban and strap your sandals on your feet; do not cover your mustache or eat the bread of mourners." 17You are to weep in silence, but you are not to participate in mourning rituals. You are to keep your turban on your head and your sandals on your feet. You are not to cover your mouth or eat what your comforters bring to you."
I spoke to the people in the morning, and my wife died in the evening. The next morning I did just as I was commanded. 18So I spoke to the people in the morning, and my wife died that evening. The next morning, I did as I had been commanded.
Then the people asked me, "Won't you tell us what these things you are doing mean for us?" 19Then the people told me, "Are you going to explain what these things that you're doing should mean to us?"
So I answered them: "The word of the LORD came to me: 20So I responded, "This message came to me from the LORD:
Say to the house of Israel: This is what the Lord GOD says: I am about to desecrate My sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the desire of your heart. Also, the sons and daughters you left behind will fall by the sword.21Tell the house of Israel that this is what the Lord GOD says: "Look! I'm about to profane my sanctuary, the source of your proud strength, the desire of your eyes, and the object of your affection. Your sons and daughters, whom you've left behind, will die by the sword.
Then you will do just as I have done: You will not cover your mustache or eat the bread of mourners.22That's why you will soon be doing what I've just done. You are not to cover your mouth or eat what your comforters bring to you.
Your turbans will remain on your heads and your sandals on your feet. You will not lament or weep but will waste away because of your sins and will groan to one another. 23Your turbans will be on your heads and your sandals will be on your feet. You won't mourn or weep. Instead, you'll waste away in your sins. Every one of you will groan to his relative.
Now Ezekiel will be a sign for you. You will do everything that he has done. When this happens, you will know that I am the Lord Yahweh." 24That's how Ezekiel will be an example for you. You'll be doing exactly what he has done. When it happens, then you'll know that I am the Lord GOD."'
Son of man, know that on the day I take their stronghold from them, their pride and joy, the delight of their eyes and the longing of their hearts, as well as their sons and daughters, 25"And now, Son of Man, on the day that I take their strength, joy, and glory from them, those whom they love to watch, the focus of their affection—their sons and daughters—
on that day a fugitive will come to you and report the news.26at that time, a fugitive will come to you and will bring you the news.
On that day your mouth will be opened to talk with him; you will speak and no longer be mute. So you will be a sign for them, and they will know that I am Yahweh.'" 27Your mouth will freely speak to the fugitive. You won't be silent any longer. You'll be a sign to them. Then they'll know that I am the LORD."
