English Standard Version | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
“Has not man a hard service on earth, and are not his days like the days of a hired hand? | 1"Is not man forced to labor on earth, And are not his days like the days of a hired man? |
Like a slave who longs for the shadow, and like a hired hand who looks for his wages, | 2"As a slave who pants for the shade, And as a hired man who eagerly waits for his wages, |
so I am allotted months of emptiness, and nights of misery are apportioned to me. | 3So am I allotted months of vanity, And nights of trouble are appointed me. |
When I lie down I say, ‘When shall I arise?’ But the night is long, and I am full of tossing till the dawn. | 4"When I lie down I say, 'When shall I arise?' But the night continues, And I am continually tossing until dawn. |
My flesh is clothed with worms and dirt; my skin hardens, then breaks out afresh. | 5"My flesh is clothed with worms and a crust of dirt, My skin hardens and runs. |
My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle and come to their end without hope. | 6"My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, And come to an end without hope. |
“Remember that my life is a breath; my eye will never again see good. | 7"Remember that my life is but breath; My eye will not again see good. |
The eye of him who sees me will behold me no more; while your eyes are on me, I shall be gone. | 8"The eye of him who sees me will behold me no longer; Your eyes will be on me, but I will not be. |
As the cloud fades and vanishes, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come up; | 9"When a cloud vanishes, it is gone, So he who goes down to Sheol does not come up. |
he returns no more to his house, nor does his place know him anymore. | 10"He will not return again to his house, Nor will his place know him anymore. |
“Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. | 11"Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit, I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. |
Am I the sea, or a sea monster, that you set a guard over me? | 12"Am I the sea, or the sea monster, That You set a guard over me? |
When I say, ‘My bed will comfort me, my couch will ease my complaint,’ | 13"If I say, 'My bed will comfort me, My couch will ease my complaint,' |
then you scare me with dreams and terrify me with visions, | 14Then You frighten me with dreams And terrify me by visions; |
so that I would choose strangling and death rather than my bones. | 15So that my soul would choose suffocation, Death rather than my pains. |
I loathe my life; I would not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are a breath. | 16"I waste away; I will not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath. |
What is man, that you make so much of him, and that you set your heart on him, | 17"What is man that You magnify him, And that You are concerned about him, |
visit him every morning and test him every moment? | 18That You examine him every morning And try him every moment? |
How long will you not look away from me, nor leave me alone till I swallow my spit? | 19"Will You never turn Your gaze away from me, Nor let me alone until I swallow my spittle? |
If I sin, what do I do to you, you watcher of mankind? Why have you made me your mark? Why have I become a burden to you? | 20"Have I sinned? What have I done to You, O watcher of men? Why have You set me as Your target, So that I am a burden to myself? |
Why do you not pardon my transgression and take away my iniquity? For now I shall lie in the earth; you will seek me, but I shall not be.” | 21"Why then do You not pardon my transgression And take away my iniquity? For now I will lie down in the dust; And You will seek me, but I will not be." |
