Christian Standard BibleNew International Version
Note this: The Lord GOD of Armies is about to remove from Jerusalem and from Judah every kind of security: the entire supply of bread and water,1See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water,
heroes and warriors, judges and prophets, fortune-tellers and elders,2the hero and the warrior, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder,
commanders of fifty and dignitaries, counselors, cunning magicians, and necromancers.3the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter.
"I will make youths their leaders, and unstable rulers will govern them."4"I will make mere youths their officials; children will rule over them."
The people will oppress one another, man against man, neighbor against neighbor; the young will act arrogantly toward the old, and the worthless toward the honorable.5People will oppress each other-- man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the nobody against the honored.
A man will even seize his brother in his father's house, saying: "You have a cloak--you be our leader! This heap of rubble will be under your control."6A man will seize one of his brothers in his father's house, and say, "You have a cloak, you be our leader; take charge of this heap of ruins!"
On that day he will cry out, saying: "I'm not a healer. I don't even have food or clothing in my house. Don't make me the leader of the people!"7But in that day he will cry out, "I have no remedy. I have no food or clothing in my house; do not make me the leader of the people."
For Jerusalem has stumbled and Judah has fallen because they have spoken and acted against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.8Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; their words and deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence.
The look on their faces testifies against them, and like Sodom, they flaunt their sin; they do not conceal it. Woe to them, for they have brought disaster on themselves.9The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.
Tell the righteous that it will go well for them, for they will eat the fruit of their labor.10Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds.
Woe to the wicked--it will go badly for them, for what they have done will be done to them.11Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them! They will be paid back for what their hands have done.
Youths oppress my people, and women rule over them. My people, your leaders mislead you; they confuse the direction of your paths.12Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. My people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path.
The LORD rises to argue the case and stands to judge the people.13The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to judge the people.
The LORD brings this charge against the elders and leaders of his people: "You have devastated the vineyard. The plunder from the poor is in your houses.14The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people: "It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses.
Why do you crush my people and grind the faces of the poor?" This is the declaration of the Lord GOD of Armies.15What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?" declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.
The LORD also says: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, walking with heads held high and seductive eyes, prancing along, jingling their ankle bracelets,16The LORD says, "The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, strutting along with swaying hips, with ornaments jingling on their ankles.
the Lord will put scabs on the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will shave their foreheads bare.17Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald."
On that day the Lord will strip their finery: ankle bracelets, headbands, crescents,18In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces,
pendants, bracelets, veils,19the earrings and bracelets and veils,
headdresses, ankle jewelry, sashes, perfume bottles, amulets,20the headdresses and anklets and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms,
signet rings, nose rings,21the signet rings and nose rings,
festive robes, capes, cloaks, purses,22the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses
garments, linen clothes, turbans, and shawls.23and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls.
Instead of perfume there will be a stench; instead of a belt, a rope; instead of beautifully styled hair, baldness; instead of fine clothes, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.24Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-dressed hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding.
Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.25Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle.
Then her gates will lament and mourn; deserted, she will sit on the ground.26The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
