Berean Study Bible | New International Version |
Behold, the LORD lays waste the earth and leaves it in ruins. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants— | 1See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants-- |
people and priest alike, servant and master, maid and mistress, buyer and seller, lender and borrower, creditor and debtor. | 2it will be the same for priest as for people, for the master as for his servant, for the mistress as for her servant, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor. |
The earth will be utterly laid waste and thoroughly plundered. For the LORD has spoken this word. | 3The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word. |
The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and fades; the exalted of the earth waste away. | 4The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the heavens languish with the earth. |
The earth is defiled by its people; they have transgressed the laws; they have overstepped the decrees and broken the everlasting covenant. | 5The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. |
Therefore a curse has consumed the earth, and its inhabitants must bear the guilt; the earth’s dwellers have been burned, and only a few survive. | 6Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth's inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left. |
The new wine dries up, the vine withers. All the merrymakers now groan. | 7The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan. |
The joyful tambourines have ceased; the noise of revelers has stopped; the joyful harp is silent. | 8The joyful timbrels are stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent. |
They no longer sing and drink wine; strong drink is bitter to those who consume it. | 9No longer do they drink wine with a song; the beer is bitter to its drinkers. |
The city of chaos is shattered; every house is closed to entry. | 10The ruined city lies desolate; the entrance to every house is barred. |
In the streets they cry out for wine. All joy turns to gloom; rejoicing is exiled from the land. | 11In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all joyful sounds are banished from the earth. |
The city is left in ruins; its gate is reduced to rubble. | 12The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pieces. |
So will it be on the earth and among the nations, like a harvested olive tree, like a gleaning after a grape harvest. | 13So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest. |
They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they proclaim the majesty of the LORD. | 14They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the LORD's majesty. |
Therefore glorify the LORD in the east. Extol the name of the LORD, the God of Israel in the islands of the sea. | 15Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea. |
From the ends of the earth we hear singing: “Glory to the Righteous One.” But I said, “I am wasting away! I am wasting away! Woe is me.” The treacherous betray; the treacherous deal in treachery. | 16From the ends of the earth we hear singing: "Glory to the Righteous One." But I said, "I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!" |
Terror and pit and snare await you, O dweller of the earth. | 17Terror and pit and snare await you, people of the earth. |
Whoever flees the sound of panic will fall into the pit, and whoever climbs from the pit will be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are open, and the foundations of the earth are shaken. | 18Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake. |
The earth is utterly broken apart, the earth is split open, the earth is shaken violently. | 19The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is violently shaken. |
The earth staggers like a drunkard and sways like a shack. Earth’s rebellion weighs it down, and it falls, never to rise again. | 20The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls--never to rise again. |
In that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven above and the kings of the earth below. | 21In that day the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below. |
They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit. They will be confined to a dungeon and punished after many days. | 22They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days. |
The moon will be confounded and the sun will be ashamed; for the LORD of Hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before His elders with great glory. | 23The moon will be dismayed, the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders--with great glory. |
