This is the burden of the word of the LORD against the land of Hadrach and Damascus its resting place—for the eyes of men and of all the tribes of Israel are upon the LORD— | 1An oracle of the word of the LORD concerning the land of Hadrach, with its focus on Damascus: The eyes of all humanity, especially of the tribes of Israel, are toward the LORD, |
and also against Hamath, which borders it, as well as Tyre and Sidon, though they are very shrewd. | 2as are those of Hamath also, which adjoins Damascus, and Tyre and Sidon, though they consider themselves to be very wise. |
Tyre has built herself a fortress; she has heaped up silver like dust, and gold like the dirt of the streets. | 3Tyre built herself a fortification and piled up silver like dust and gold like the mud of the streets! |
Behold, the Lord will impoverish her and cast her wealth into the sea, and she will be consumed by fire. | 4Nevertheless the Lord will evict her and shove her fortifications into the sea--she will be consumed by fire. |
Ashkelon will see and fear; Gaza will writhe in agony, as will Ekron, for her hope will wither. There will cease to be a king in Gaza, and Ashkelon will be uninhabited. | 5Ashkelon will see and be afraid; Gaza will be in great anguish, as will Ekron, for her hope will have been dried up. Gaza will lose her king, and Ashkelon will no longer be inhabited. |
A mixed race will occupy Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines. | 6A mongrel people will live in Ashdod, for I will greatly humiliate the Philistines. |
I will remove the blood from their mouths and the abominations from between their teeth. Then they too will become a remnant for our God; they will become like a clan in Judah, and Ekron will be like the Jebusites. | 7I will take away their abominable religious practices; then those who survive will become a community of believers in our God, like a clan in Judah, and Ekron will be like the Jebusites. |
But I will camp around My house because of an army, because of those who march to and fro, and never again will an oppressor overrun My people, for now I keep watch with My own eyes. | 8Then I will surround my temple to protect it like a guard from anyone crossing back and forth; so no one will cross over against them anymore as an oppressor, for now I myself have seen it. |
Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your King comes to you, righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. | 9Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Look! Your king is coming to you: he is legitimate and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey--on a young donkey, the foal of a female donkey. |
And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem, and the bow of war will be broken. Then He will proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion will extend from sea to sea, and from the Euphrates to the ends of the earth. | 10I will remove the chariot from Ephraim and the warhorse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be removed. Then he will announce peace to the nations. His dominion will be from sea to sea and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth. |
As for you, because of the blood of My covenant, I will release your prisoners from the waterless pit. | 11Moreover, as for you, because of our covenant relationship secured with blood, I will release your prisoners from the waterless pit. |
Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; even today I declare that I will restore to you double. | 12Return to the stronghold, you prisoners, with hope; today I declare that I will return double what was taken from you. |
For I will bend Judah as My bow and fit it with Ephraim. I will rouse your sons, O Zion, against the sons of Greece. I will make you like the sword of a mighty man. | 13I will bend Judah as my bow; I will load the bow with Ephraim, my arrow! I will stir up your sons, Zion, against yours, Greece, and I will make you, Zion, like a warrior's sword. |
Then the LORD will appear over them, and His arrow will go forth like lightning. The Lord GOD will sound the ram’s horn and advance in the whirlwinds of the south. | 14Then the LORD will appear above them, and his arrow will shoot forth like lightning; the Lord GOD will blow the trumpet and will sally forth on the southern storm winds. |
The LORD of Hosts will shield them. They will destroy and conquer with slingstones; they will drink and roar as with wine. And they will be filled like sprinkling bowls, drenched like the corners of the altar. | 15The LORD who rules over all will guard them, and they will prevail and overcome with sling stones. Then they will drink, and will become noisy like drunkards, full like the sacrificial basin or like the corners of the altar. |
On that day the LORD their God will save them as the flock of His people; for like jewels in a crown they will sparkle over His land. | 16On that day the LORD their God will deliver them as the flock of his people, for they are the precious stones of a crown sparkling over his land. |
How lovely they will be, and how beautiful! Grain will make the young men flourish, and new wine, the young women. | 17How precious and fair! Grain will make the young men flourish and new wine the young women. |
