For the choirmaster. To the tune of “The Lily of the Covenant.” A Miktam of David for instruction. When he fought Aram-naharaim and Aram-zobah, and Joab returned and struck down 12,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. You have rejected us, O God; You have broken us; You have been angry; restore us!1For the music director; according to the shushan-eduth style; a prayer of David written to instruct others. It was written when he fought against Aram Naharaim and Aram-Zobah. That was when Joab turned back and struck down 12,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. O God, you have rejected us. You suddenly turned on us in your anger. Please restore us!
You have shaken the land and torn it open. Heal its fractures, for it is quaking.2You made the earth quake; you split it open. Repair its breaches, for it is ready to fall.
You have shown Your people hardship; we are staggered from the wine You made us drink.3You have made your people experience hard times; you have made us drink intoxicating wine.
You have raised a banner for those who fear You, that they may flee the bow. Selah4You have given your loyal followers a rallying flag, so that they might seek safety from the bow. (Selah)
Respond and save us with Your right hand, that Your beloved may be delivered.5Deliver by your power and answer me, so that the ones you love may be safe.
God has spoken from His sanctuary: “I will triumph! I will parcel out Shechem and apportion the Valley of Succoth.6God has spoken in his sanctuary: "I will triumph! I will parcel out Shechem; the Valley of Succoth I will measure off.
Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim is My helmet, Judah is My scepter.7Gilead belongs to me, as does Manasseh! Ephraim is my helmet, Judah my royal scepter.
Moab is My washbasin; upon Edom I toss My sandal; over Philistia I shout in triumph.”8Moab is my washbasin. I will make Edom serve me. I will shout in triumph over Philistia."
Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom?9Who will lead me into the fortified city? Who will bring me to Edom?
Have You not rejected us, O God? Will You no longer march out, O God, with our armies?10Have you not rejected us, O God? O God, you do not go into battle with our armies.
Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.11Give us help against the enemy, for any help men might offer is futile.
With God we will perform with valor, and He will trample our enemies.12By God's power we will conquer; he will trample down our enemies.
