Then Job answered:1Then Job replied:
“I have heard many things like these; miserable comforters are you all.2"I have heard many things like these before. What miserable comforters are you all!
Is there no end to your long-winded speeches? What provokes you to continue testifying?3Will there be an end to your windy words? Or what provokes you that you answer?
I could also speak like you if you were in my place; I could heap up words against you and shake my head at you.4I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could pile up words against you and I could shake my head at you.
But I would encourage you with my mouth, and the consolation of my lips would bring relief.5But I would strengthen you with my words; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.
Even if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I hold back, how will it go away?6"But if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I refrain from speaking--how much of it goes away?
Surely He has now exhausted me; You have devastated all my family.7Surely now he has worn me out, you have devastated my entire household.
You have bound me, and it has become a witness; my frailty rises up and testifies against me.8You have seized me, and it has become a witness; my leanness has risen up against me and testifies against me.
His anger has torn me and opposed me; He gnashes His teeth at me. My adversary pierces me with His eyes.9His anger has torn me and persecuted me; he has gnashed at me with his teeth; my adversary locks his eyes on me.
They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks with contempt; they join together against me.10People have opened their mouths against me, they have struck my cheek in scorn; they unite together against me.
God has delivered me to unjust men; He has thrown me to the clutches of the wicked.11God abandons me to evil men, and throws me into the hands of wicked men.
I was at ease, but He shattered me; He seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has set me up as His target;12I was in peace, and he has shattered me. He has seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target;
His archers surround me. He pierces my kidneys without mercy and spills my gall on the ground.13his archers surround me. Without pity he pierces my kidneys and pours out my gall on the ground.
He breaks me with wound upon wound; He rushes me like a mighty warrior.14He breaks through against me, time and time again; he rushes against me like a warrior.
I have sewn sackcloth over my skin; I have buried my horn in the dust.15I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and buried my horn in the dust;
My face is red with weeping, and deep shadows ring my eyes;16my face is reddened because of weeping, and on my eyelids there is a deep darkness,
yet my hands are free of violence and my prayer is pure.17although there is no violence in my hands and my prayer is pure.
O earth, do not cover my blood; may my cry for help never be laid to rest.18"O earth, do not cover my blood, nor let there be a secret place for my cry.
Even now my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high.19Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high.
My friends are my scoffers as my eyes pour out tears to God.20My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God;
Oh, that a man might plead with God as he pleads with his neighbor!21and he contends with God on behalf of man as a man pleads for his friend.
For when only a few years are past I will go the way of no return.22For the years that lie ahead are few, and then I will go on the way of no return.
