Parallel Chapters The Deceit of the Gibeonites 1Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things--the kings in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Mediterranean Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites)-- | 1As soon as all the kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the lowland all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, heard of this, | 1Now it came about when all the kings who were beyond the Jordan, in the hill country and in the lowland and on all the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon, the Hittite and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, heard of it, | 1And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof; | 1When all the kings heard about Jericho and Ai, those who were west of the Jordan in the hill country, in the Judean foothills, and all along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea toward Lebanon--the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites-- |
they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel. | 2they gathered together as one to fight against Joshua and Israel. | 2that they gathered themselves together with one accord to fight with Joshua and with Israel. | 2That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord. | 2they formed a unified alliance to fight against Joshua and Israel. |
However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, | 3But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, | 3When the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, | 3And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai, | 3When the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, |
they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. | 4they on their part acted with cunning and went and made ready provisions and took worn-out sacks for their donkeys, and wineskins, worn-out and torn and mended, | 4they also acted craftily and set out as envoys, and took worn-out sacks on their donkeys, and wineskins worn-out and torn and mended, | 4They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up; | 4they acted deceptively. They gathered provisions and took worn-out sacks on their donkeys and old wineskins, cracked and mended. |
They put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. | 5with worn-out, patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes. And all their provisions were dry and crumbly. | 5and worn-out and patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes on themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and had become crumbled. | 5And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy. | 5They wore old, patched sandals on their feet and threadbare clothing on their bodies. Their entire provision of bread was dry and crumbly. |
Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the Israelites, "We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us." | 6And they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant country, so now make a covenant with us.” | 6They went to Joshua to the camp at Gilgal and said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a far country; now therefore, make a covenant with us." | 6And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us. | 6They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, "We have come from a distant land. Please make a treaty with us." |
The Israelites said to the Hivites, "But perhaps you live near us, so how can we make a treaty with you?" | 7But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you live among us; then how can we make a covenant with you?” | 7The men of Israel said to the Hivites, "Perhaps you are living within our land; how then shall we make a covenant with you?" | 7And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you? | 7The men of Israel replied to the Hivites, "Perhaps you live among us. How can we make a treaty with you?" |
"We are your servants," they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, "Who are you and where do you come from?" | 8They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” And Joshua said to them, “Who are you? And where do you come from?” | 8But they said to Joshua, "We are your servants." Then Joshua said to them, "Who are you and where do you come from?" | 8And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye? | 8They said to Joshua, "We are your servants." Then Joshua asked them, "Who are you and where do you come from?" |
They answered: "Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt, | 9They said to him, “From a very distant country your servants have come, because of the name of the LORD your God. For we have heard a report of him, and all that he did in Egypt, | 9They said to him, "Your servants have come from a very far country because of the fame of the LORD your God; for we have heard the report of Him and all that He did in Egypt, | 9And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt, | 9They replied to him, "Your servants have come from a far away land because of the reputation of the LORD your God. For we have heard of His fame, and all that He did in Egypt, |
and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan--Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth. | 10and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon the king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth. | 10and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan who was at Ashtaroth. | 10And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth. | 10and all that He did to the two Amorite kings beyond the Jordan--Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan, who was in Ashtaroth. |
And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, 'Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, "We are your servants; make a treaty with us."' | 11So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, ‘Take provisions in your hand for the journey and go to meet them and say to them, “We are your servants. Come now, make a covenant with us.”’ | 11"So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, 'Take provisions in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them and say to them, "We are your servants; now then, make a covenant with us."' | 11Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us. | 11So our elders and all the inhabitants of our land told us, 'Take provisions with you for the journey; go and meet them and say, "We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us."' |
This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is. | 12Here is our bread. It was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey on the day we set out to come to you, but now, behold, it is dry and crumbly. | 12"This our bread was warm when we took it for our provisions out of our houses on the day that we left to come to you; but now behold, it is dry and has become crumbled. | 12This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy: | 12This bread of ours was warm when we took it from our houses as food on the day we left to come to you. But take a look, it is now dry and crumbly. |
And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey." | 13These wineskins were new when we filled them, and behold, they have burst. And these garments and sandals of ours are worn out from the very long journey.” | 13"These wineskins which we filled were new, and behold, they are torn; and these our clothes and our sandals are worn out because of the very long journey." | 13And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey. | 13These wineskins were new when we filled them, but look, they are cracked. And these clothes and sandals of ours are worn out from the extremely long journey." |
The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD. | 14So the men took some of their provisions, but did not ask counsel from the LORD. | 14So the men of Israel took some of their provisions, and did not ask for the counsel of the LORD. | 14And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD. | 14Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions, but did not seek the LORD's counsel. |
Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath. | 15And Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore to them. | 15Joshua made peace with them and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the congregation swore an oath to them. | 15And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them. | 15So Joshua established peace with them and made a treaty to let them live, and the leaders of the community swore an oath to them. |
Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them. | 16At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors and that they lived among them. | 16It came about at the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were neighbors and that they were living within their land. | 16And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them. | 16Three days after making the treaty with them, they heard that the Gibeonites were their neighbors, living among them. |
So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim. | 17And the people of Israel set out and reached their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim. | 17Then the sons of Israel set out and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon and Chephirah and Beeroth and Kiriath-jearim. | 17And the children of Israel journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjathjearim. | 17So the Israelites set out and reached the Gibeonite cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim. |
But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders, | 18But the people of Israel did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. Then all the congregation murmured against the leaders. | 18The sons of Israel did not strike them because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD the God of Israel. And the whole congregation grumbled against the leaders. | 18And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes. | 18But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the community had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. Then the whole community grumbled against the leaders. |
but all the leaders answered, "We have given them our oath by the LORD, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now. | 19But all the leaders said to all the congregation, “We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them. | 19But all the leaders said to the whole congregation, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them. | 19But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them. | 19All the leaders answered them, "We have sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them. |
This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that God's wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them." | 20This we will do to them: let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath that we swore to them.” | 20"This we will do to them, even let them live, so that wrath will not be upon us for the oath which we swore to them." | 20This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them. | 20This is how we will treat them: we will let them live, so that no wrath will fall on us because of the oath we swore to them." |
They continued, "Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers in the service of the whole assembly." So the leaders' promise to them was kept. | 21And the leaders said to them, “Let them live.” So they became cutters of wood and drawers of water for all the congregation, just as the leaders had said of them. | 21The leaders said to them, "Let them live." So they became hewers of wood and drawers of water for the whole congregation, just as the leaders had spoken to them. | 21And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them. | 21They also said, "Let them live." So the Gibeonites became woodcutters and water carriers for the whole community, as the leaders had promised them. |
Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, "Why did you deceive us by saying, 'We live a long way from you,' while actually you live near us? | 22Joshua summoned them, and he said to them, “Why did you deceive us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you dwell among us? | 22Then Joshua called for them and spoke to them, saying, "Why have you deceived us, saying, 'We are very far from you,' when you are living within our land? | 22And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us? | 22Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said to them, "Why did you deceive us by telling us you live far away from us, when in fact you live among us? |
You are now under a curse: You will never be released from service as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God." | 23Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you shall never be anything but servants, cutters of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.” | 23"Now therefore, you are cursed, and you shall never cease being slaves, both hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God." | 23Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God. | 23Therefore you are cursed and will always be slaves--woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God." |
They answered Joshua, "Your servants were clearly told how the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this. | 24They answered Joshua, “Because it was told to your servants for a certainty that the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you—so we feared greatly for our lives because of you and did this thing. | 24So they answered Joshua and said, "Because it was certainly told your servants that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land before you; therefore we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and have done this thing. | 24And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing. | 24The Gibeonites answered him, "It was clearly communicated to your servants that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land before you. We greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this. |
We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you." | 25And now, behold, we are in your hand. Whatever seems good and right in your sight to do to us, do it.” | 25"Now behold, we are in your hands; do as it seems good and right in your sight to do to us." | 25And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do. | 25Now we are in your hands. Do to us whatever you think is right." |
So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them. | 26So he did this to them and delivered them out of the hand of the people of Israel, and they did not kill them. | 26Thus he did to them, and delivered them from the hands of the sons of Israel, and they did not kill them. | 26And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not. | 26This is what Joshua did to them: he delivered them from the hands of the Israelites, and they did not kill them. |
That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the assembly, to provide for the needs of the altar of the LORD at the place the LORD would choose. And that is what they are to this day. | 27But Joshua made them that day cutters of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, to this day, in the place that he should choose. | 27But Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, to this day, in the place which He would choose. | 27And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose. | 27On that day he made them woodcutters and water carriers--as they are today--for the community and for the LORD's altar at the place He would choose. |
