I will punish you for all your detestable practices. |
I will not look on you with pity; I will not spare you. I will surely repay you for your conduct and for the detestable practices among you. "'Then you will know that I am the LORD.' | 4And my eye will not spare you, nor will I have pity, but I will punish you for your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. Then you will know that I am the LORD. | 4For My eye will have no pity on you, nor will I spare you, but I will bring your ways upon you, and your abominations will be among you; then you will know that I am the LORD!' | 4And mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the LORD. | 4I will not look on you with pity or spare you, but I will punish you for your ways and for your detestable practices within you. Then you will know that I am Yahweh." |
"This is what the Sovereign LORD says: "'Disaster! Unheard-of disaster! See, it comes! | 5“Thus says the Lord GOD: Disaster after disaster! Behold, it comes. | 5"Thus says the Lord GOD, 'A disaster, unique disaster, behold it is coming! | 5Thus saith the Lord GOD; An evil, an only evil, behold, is come. | 5This is what the Lord GOD says: Look, one disaster after another is coming! |
The end has come! The end has come! It has roused itself against you. See, it comes! | 6An end has come; the end has come; it has awakened against you. Behold, it comes. | 6'An end is coming; the end has come! It has awakened against you; behold, it has come! | 6An end is come, the end is come: it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come. | 6An end has come; the end has come! It has awakened against you. Look, it is coming! |
Doom has come upon you, upon you who dwell in the land. The time has come! The day is near! There is panic, not joy, on the mountains. | 7Your doom has come to you, O inhabitant of the land. The time has come; the day is near, a day of tumult, and not of joyful shouting on the mountains. | 7'Your doom has come to you, O inhabitant of the land. The time has come, the day is near-- tumult rather than joyful shouting on the mountains. | 7The morning is come unto thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble is near, and not the sounding again of the mountains. | 7Doom has come on you, inhabitants of the land. The time has come; the day is near. There will be panic on the mountains and not celebration. |
I am about to pour out my wrath on you and spend my anger against you. I will judge you according to your conduct and repay you for all your detestable practices. | 8Now I will soon pour out my wrath upon you, and spend my anger against you, and judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations. | 8'Now I will shortly pour out My wrath on you and spend My anger against you; judge you according to your ways and bring on you all your abominations. | 8Now will I shortly pour out my fury upon thee, and accomplish mine anger upon thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense thee for all thine abominations. | 8I will pour out My wrath on you very soon; I will exhaust My anger against you and judge you according to your ways. I will punish you for all your detestable practices. |
I will not look on you with pity; I will not spare you. I will repay you for your conduct and for the detestable practices among you. "'Then you will know that it is I the LORD who strikes you. | 9And my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. I will punish you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. Then you will know that I am the LORD, who strikes. | 9'My eye will show no pity nor will I spare. I will repay you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst; then you will know that I, the LORD, do the smiting. | 9And mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: I will recompense thee according to thy ways and thine abominations that are in the midst of thee; and ye shall know that I am the LORD that smiteth. | 9I will not look on you with pity or spare you. I will punish you for your ways and for your detestable practices within you. Then you will know that it is I, Yahweh, who strikes. |
"'See, the day! See, it comes! Doom has burst forth, the rod has budded, arrogance has blossomed! | 10“Behold, the day! Behold, it comes! Your doom has come; the rod has blossomed; pride has budded. | 10Behold, the day! Behold, it is coming! Your doom has gone forth; the rod has budded, arrogance has blossomed. | 10Behold the day, behold, it is come: the morning is gone forth; the rod hath blossomed, pride hath budded. | 10Look, the day is coming! Doom has gone out. The rod has blossomed; arrogance has bloomed. |
Violence has arisen, a rod to punish the wicked. None of the people will be left, none of that crowd-- none of their wealth, nothing of value. | 11Violence has grown up into a rod of wickedness. None of them shall remain, nor their abundance, nor their wealth; neither shall there be preeminence among them. | 11Violence has grown into a rod of wickedness. None of them shall remain, none of their people, none of their wealth, nor anything eminent among them. | 11Violence is risen up into a rod of wickedness: none of them shall remain, nor of their multitude, nor of any of theirs: neither shall there be wailing for them. | 11Violence has grown into a rod of wickedness. None of them will remain: none of their multitude, none of their wealth, and none of the eminent among them. |
The time has come! The day has arrived! Let not the buyer rejoice nor the seller grieve, for my wrath is on the whole crowd. | 12The time has come; the day has arrived. Let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn, for wrath is upon all their multitude. | 12'The time has come, the day has arrived. Let not the buyer rejoice nor the seller mourn; for wrath is against all their multitude. | 12The time is come, the day draweth near: let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn: for wrath is upon all the multitude thereof. | 12The time has come; the day has arrived. Let the buyer not rejoice and the seller not mourn, for wrath is on all her masses. |
The seller will not recover the property that was sold-- as long as both buyer and seller live. For the vision concerning the whole crowd will not be reversed. Because of their sins, not one of them will preserve their life. | 13For the seller shall not return to what he has sold, while they live. For the vision concerns all their multitude; it shall not turn back; and because of his iniquity, none can maintain his life. | 13Indeed, the seller will not regain what he sold as long as they both live; for the vision regarding all their multitude will not be averted, nor will any of them maintain his life by his iniquity. | 13For the seller shall not return to that which is sold, although they were yet alive: for the vision is touching the whole multitude thereof, which shall not return; neither shall any strengthen himself in the iniquity of his life. | 13The seller will certainly not return to what was sold as long as he and the buyer remain alive. For the vision concerning all its people will not be revoked, and none of them will preserve his life because of his iniquity. |
The Desolation of Israel 14"'They have blown the trumpet, they have made all things ready, but no one will go into battle, for my wrath is on the whole crowd. | 14“They have blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but none goes to battle, for my wrath is upon all their multitude. | 14'They have blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but no one is going to the battle, for My wrath is against all their multitude. | 14They have blown the trumpet, even to make all ready; but none goeth to the battle: for my wrath is upon all the multitude thereof. | 14They have blown the trumpet and prepared everything, but no one goes to war, for My wrath is on all her masses. |
Outside is the sword; inside are plague and famine. Those in the country will die by the sword; those in the city will be devoured by famine and plague. | 15The sword is without; pestilence and famine are within. He who is in the field dies by the sword, and him who is in the city famine and pestilence devour. | 15'The sword is outside and the plague and the famine are within. He who is in the field will die by the sword; famine and the plague will also consume those in the city. | 15The sword is without, and the pestilence and the famine within: he that is in the field shall die with the sword; and he that is in the city, famine and pestilence shall devour him. | 15The sword is on the outside; plague and famine are on the inside. Whoever is in the field will die by the sword, and famine and plague will devour whoever is in the city. |
The fugitives who escape will flee to the mountains. Like doves of the valleys, they will all moan, each for their own sins. | 16And if any survivors escape, they will be on the mountains, like doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, each one over his iniquity. | 16'Even when their survivors escape, they will be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them mourning, each over his own iniquity. | 16But they that escape of them shall escape, and shall be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them mourning, every one for his iniquity. | 16The survivors among them will escape and live on the mountains like doves of the valley, all of them moaning, each over his own iniquity. |
Every hand will go limp; every leg will be wet with urine. | 17All hands are feeble, and all knees turn to water. | 17All hands will hang limp and all knees will become like water. | 17All hands shall be feeble, and all knees shall be weak as water. | 17All their hands will become weak, and all their knees will turn to water. |
They will put on sackcloth and be clothed with terror. Every face will be covered with shame, and every head will be shaved. | 18They put on sackcloth, and horror covers them. Shame is on all faces, and baldness on all their heads. | 18They will gird themselves with sackcloth and shuddering will overwhelm them; and shame will be on all faces and baldness on all their heads. | 18They shall also gird themselves with sackcloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads. | 18They will put on sackcloth, and horror will overwhelm them. Shame will cover all their faces, and all their heads will be bald. |
"'They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will be treated as a thing unclean. Their silver and gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD's wrath. It will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs, for it has caused them to stumble into sin. | 19They cast their silver into the streets, and their gold is like an unclean thing. Their silver and gold are not able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it. For it was the stumbling block of their iniquity. | 19'They will fling their silver into the streets and their gold will become an abhorrent thing; their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They cannot satisfy their appetite nor can they fill their stomachs, for their iniquity has become an occasion of stumbling. | 19They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity. | 19They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will seem like something filthy. Their silver and gold will be unable to save them in the day of the LORD's wrath. They will not satisfy their appetites or fill their stomachs, for these were the stumbling blocks that brought about their iniquity. |
They took pride in their beautiful jewelry and used it to make their detestable idols. They made it into vile images; therefore I will make it a thing unclean for them. | 20His beautiful ornament they used for pride, and they made their abominable images and their detestable things of it. Therefore I make it an unclean thing to them. | 20They transformed the beauty of His ornaments into pride, and they made the images of their abominations and their detestable things with it; therefore I will make it an abhorrent thing to them. | 20As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty: but they made the images of their abominations and of their detestable things therein: therefore have I set it far from them. | 20He appointed His beautiful ornaments for majesty, but they made their abhorrent images from them, their detestable things. Therefore, I have made these into something filthy for them. |
I will give their wealth as plunder to foreigners and as loot to the wicked of the earth, who will defile it. | 21And I will give it into the hands of foreigners for prey, and to the wicked of the earth for spoil, and they shall profane it. | 21'I will give it into the hands of the foreigners as plunder and to the wicked of the earth as spoil, and they will profane it. | 21And I will give it into the hands of the strangers for a prey, and to the wicked of the earth for a spoil; and they shall pollute it. | 21I will hand these things over to foreigners as plunder and to the wicked of the earth as spoil, and they will profane them. |
I will turn my face away from the people, and robbers will desecrate the place I treasure. They will enter it and will defile it. | 22I will turn my face from them, and they shall profane my treasured place. Robbers shall enter and profane it. | 22'I will also turn My face from them, and they will profane My secret place; then robbers will enter and profane it. | 22My face will I turn also from them, and they shall pollute my secret place: for the robbers shall enter into it, and defile it. | 22I will turn My face from the wicked as they profane My treasured place. Violent men will enter it and profane it. |
"'Prepare chains! For the land is full of bloodshed, and the city is full of violence. | 23“Forge a chain! For the land is full of bloody crimes and the city is full of violence. | 23'Make the chain, for the land is full of bloody crimes and the city is full of violence. | 23Make a chain: for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence. | 23Forge the chain, for the land is filled with crimes of bloodshed, and the city is filled with violence. |
I will bring the most wicked of nations to take possession of their houses. I will put an end to the pride of the mighty, and their sanctuaries will be desecrated. | 24I will bring the worst of the nations to take possession of their houses. I will put an end to the pride of the strong, and their holy places shall be profaned. | 24'Therefore, I will bring the worst of the nations, and they will possess their houses. I will also make the pride of the strong ones cease, and their holy places will be profaned. | 24Wherefore I will bring the worst of the heathen, and they shall possess their houses: I will also make the pomp of the strong to cease; and their holy places shall be defiled. | 24So I will bring the most evil of nations to take possession of their houses. I will put an end to the pride of the strong, and their sacred places will be profaned. |
When terror comes, they will seek peace in vain. | 25When anguish comes, they will seek peace, but there shall be none. | 25'When anguish comes, they will seek peace, but there will be none. | 25Destruction cometh; and they shall seek peace, and there shall be none. | 25Anguish is coming! They will seek peace, but there will be none. |
Calamity upon calamity will come, and rumor upon rumor. They will go searching for a vision from the prophet, priestly instruction in the law will cease, the counsel of the elders will come to an end. | 26Disaster comes upon disaster; rumor follows rumor. They seek a vision from the prophet, while the law perishes from the priest and counsel from the elders. | 26Disaster will come upon disaster and rumor will be added to rumor; then they will seek a vision from a prophet, but the law will be lost from the priest and counsel from the elders. | 26Mischief shall come upon mischief, and rumour shall be upon rumour; then shall they seek a vision of the prophet; but the law shall perish from the priest, and counsel from the ancients. | 26Disaster after disaster will come, and there will be rumor after rumor. Then they will seek a vision from a prophet, but instruction will perish from the priests and counsel from the elders. |
The king will mourn, the prince will be clothed with despair, and the hands of the people of the land will tremble. I will deal with them according to their conduct, and by their own standards I will judge them. "'Then they will know that I am the LORD.'" | 27The king mourns, the prince is wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people of the land are paralyzed by terror. According to their way I will do to them, and according to their judgments I will judge them, and they shall know that I am the LORD.” | 27'The king will mourn, the prince will be clothed with horror, and the hands of the people of the land will tremble. According to their conduct I will deal with them, and by their judgments I will judge them. And they will know that I am the LORD.'" | 27The king shall mourn, and the prince shall be clothed with desolation, and the hands of the people of the land shall be troubled: I will do unto them after their way, and according to their deserts will I judge them; and they shall know that I am the LORD. | 27The king will mourn; the prince will be clothed in grief; and the hands of the people of the land will tremble. I will deal with them according to their own conduct, and I will judge them by their own standards. Then they will know that I am Yahweh. |
