God Instructs Joshua
(Deuteronomy 11:8–17)

1  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) אַחֲרֵ֛י (after) מ֥וֹת (the death) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (of Moses) עֶ֣בֶד (the servant) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (that spoke) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ (Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נ֔וּן (of Nun), מְשָׁרֵ֥ת (minister) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (of Moses), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses) עַבְדִּ֖י (My servant) מֵ֑ת (is dead). וְעַתָּה֩ (And now) ק֨וּם (arise), עֲבֹ֜ר (pass over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֣ן (the Jordan) הַזֶּ֗ה (this), אַתָּה֙ (you) וְכָל־ (and all) הָעָ֣ם (the people) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֕רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) נֹתֵ֥ן (am giving) לָהֶ֖ם (to them), לִבְנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

3  כָּל־ (Every) מָק֗וֹם (place) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) תִּדְרֹ֧ךְ (will tread) כַּֽף־ (the sole) רַגְלְכֶ֛ם (of your⁺ foot) בּ֖וֹ (in it), לָכֶ֣ם (to you⁺) נְתַתִּ֑יו (have I given) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי (I said) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (Moses). 4  מֵהַמִּדְבָּר֩ (From the wilderness) וְהַלְּבָנ֨וֹן (and Lebanon) הַזֶּ֜ה (this) וְֽעַד־ (and as far as) הַנָּהָ֧ר (the river) הַגָּד֣וֹל (great), נְהַר־ (the River) פְּרָ֗ת (Euphrates), כֹּ֚ל (all) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) הַֽחִתִּ֔ים (of the Hittites), וְעַד־ (and to) הַיָּ֥ם (the Sea) הַגָּד֖וֹל (Great) מְב֣וֹא (toward the going down) הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ (of the sun), יִֽהְיֶ֖ה (shall be) גְּבוּלְכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ territory).

5  לֹֽא־ (Not) יִתְיַצֵּ֥ב (shall stand) אִישׁ֙ (man) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (before you) כֹּ֖ל (all) יְמֵ֣י (the days) חַיֶּ֑יךָ (of your life); כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֨ר (as) הָיִ֤יתִי (I was) עִם־ (with) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses), אֶהְיֶ֣ה (I will be) עִמָּ֔ךְ (with you). לֹ֥א (Not) אַרְפְּךָ֖ (I will leave you) וְלֹ֥א (and not) אֶעֶזְבֶֽךָּ׃ (I will forsake you).

6  חֲזַ֖ק (Be strong) וֶאֱמָ֑ץ (and of good courage), כִּ֣י (for) אַתָּ֗ה (you) תַּנְחִיל֙ (shall divide as an inheritance) אֶת־ (to) הָעָ֣ם (the people) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֕רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נִשְׁבַּ֥עְתִּי (I swore) לַאֲבוֹתָ֖ם (to their fathers) לָתֵ֥ת (to give) לָהֶֽם׃ (to them).

7  רַק֩ (Only) חֲזַ֨ק (be strong) וֶֽאֱמַ֜ץ (and be courageous) מְאֹ֗ד (very), לִשְׁמֹ֤ר (to be careful) לַעֲשׂוֹת֙ (to do) כְּכָל־ (according to all) הַתּוֹרָ֗ה (the law) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) צִוְּךָ֙ (commanded you) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (Moses) עַבְדִּ֔י (My servant). אַל־ (Not) תָּס֥וּר (do turn) מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (from it) יָמִ֣ין (to the right hand) וּשְׂמֹ֑אול (or to the left), לְמַ֣עַן (so that) תַּשְׂכִּ֔יל (you may prosper) בְּכֹ֖ל (in every place) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (where) תֵּלֵֽךְ׃ (you go). 8  לֹֽא־ (Not) יָמ֡וּשׁ (shall depart) סֵפֶר֩ (the Book) הַתּוֹרָ֨ה (of the Law) הַזֶּ֜ה (this) מִפִּ֗יךָ (from your mouth); וְהָגִ֤יתָ (and you shall meditate) בּוֹ֙ (in it) יוֹמָ֣ם (day) וָלַ֔יְלָה (and night), לְמַ֙עַן֙ (so that) תִּשְׁמֹ֣ר (you will be careful) לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת (to do) כְּכָל־ (according to all) הַכָּת֖וּב (written) בּ֑וֹ (in it). כִּי־ (For) אָ֛ז (then) תַּצְלִ֥יחַ (you will make prosperous) אֶת־ (-) דְּרָכֶ֖ךָ (your way) וְאָ֥ז (and then) תַּשְׂכִּֽיל׃ (you will succeed).

9  הֲל֤וֹא (Have not) צִוִּיתִ֙יךָ֙ (I commanded you) חֲזַ֣ק (to be strong) וֶאֱמָ֔ץ (and to be of good courage)? אַֽל־ (Do not) תַּעֲרֹ֖ץ (be afraid) וְאַל־ (and not) תֵּחָ֑ת (be dismayed), כִּ֤י (for) עִמְּךָ֙ (with you) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ (your God is) בְּכֹ֖ל (in every place) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (where) תֵּלֵֽךְ׃פ (you go).

Joshua Takes Charge

10  וַיְצַ֣ו (And commanded) יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ (Joshua) אֶת־ (-) שֹׁטְרֵ֥י (the officers) הָעָ֖ם (of the people), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 11  עִבְר֣וּ׀ (Pass over) בְּקֶ֣רֶב (in the midst) הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֗ה (the camp) וְצַוּ֤וּ (and command) אֶת־ (-) הָעָם֙ (the people), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הָכִ֥ינוּ (Prepare) לָכֶ֖ם (for yourselves) צֵידָ֑ה (provisions), כִּ֞י (for) בְּע֣וֹד׀ (within) שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (three) יָמִ֗ים (days) אַתֶּם֙ (you⁺) עֹֽבְרִים֙ (will pass over) אֶת־ (-) הַיַּרְדֵּ֣ן (the Jordan) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) לָבוֹא֙ (to go in) לָרֶ֣שֶׁת (to possess) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר֙ (that) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God) נֹתֵ֥ן (is giving) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ס (to possess).

12  וְלָרֽאוּבֵנִי֙ (And to the Reubenite), וְלַגָּדִ֔י (and the Gadite), וְלַחֲצִ֖י (and to the half) שֵׁ֣בֶט (tribe) הַֽמְנַשֶּׁ֑ה (of Manasseh), אָמַ֥ר (spoke) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 13  זָכוֹר֙ (Remember) אֶת־ (-) הַדָּבָ֔ר (the word) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) צִוָּ֥ה (commanded) אֶתְכֶ֛ם (you⁺) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses) עֶֽבֶד־ (the servant) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ God) מֵנִ֣יחַ (is giving rest) לָכֶ֔ם (to you⁺) וְנָתַ֥ן (and He will give) לָכֶ֖ם (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֥רֶץ (the land) הַזֹּֽאת׃ (this). 14  נְשֵׁיכֶ֣ם (Your⁺ wives), טַפְּכֶם֮ (your⁺ little ones), וּמִקְנֵיכֶם֒ (and your⁺ livestock) יֵשְׁב֕וּ (shall remain) בָּאָ֕רֶץ (in the land) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) נָתַ֥ן (gave) לָכֶ֛ם (to you⁺) מֹשֶׁ֖ה (Moses) בְּעֵ֣בֶר (on this side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן (of the Jordan). וְאַתֶּם֩ (And you⁺) תַּעַבְר֨וּ (shall pass over) חֲמֻשִׁ֜ים (armed for battle) לִפְנֵ֣י (before the face of) אֲחֵיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ brothers), כֹּ֚ל (all) גִּבּוֹרֵ֣י (the mighty) הַחַ֔יִל (ones of valor); וַעֲזַרְתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ shall) אוֹתָֽם׃ (them). 15  עַ֠ד (Until) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יָנִ֨יחַ (has given rest) יְהוָ֥ה׀ (YHWH) לַֽאֲחֵיכֶם֮ (to your⁺ brothers) כָּכֶם֒ (as to you⁺), וְיָרְשׁ֣וּ (and have taken possession) גַם־ (even) הֵ֔מָּה (they) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֕רֶץ (of the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֖ם (your⁺ God) נֹתֵ֣ן (is giving) לָהֶ֑ם (to them). וְשַׁבְתֶּ֞ם (And you⁺ shall return) לְאֶ֤רֶץ (to the land) יְרֻשַּׁתְכֶם֙ (of your⁺ possession) וִֽירִשְׁתֶּ֣ם (and take possession of) אוֹתָ֔הּ (-) אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ (that which) נָתַ֣ן (gave) לָכֶ֗ם (to you⁺) מֹשֶׁה֙ (Moses) עֶ֣בֶד (the servant) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) בְּעֵ֥בֶר (on this side) הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן (of the Jordan) מִזְרַ֥ח (toward the rising) הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃ (of the sun).

16  וַֽיַּעֲנ֔וּ (And they answered) אֶת־ (-) יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ (Joshua), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), כֹּ֤ל (All) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צִוִּיתָ֙נוּ֙ (you command us), נַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה (we will do), וְאֶֽל־ (and to) כָּל־ (every place) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (where) תִּשְׁלָחֵ֖נוּ (you send us), נֵלֵֽךְ׃ (we will go). 17  כְּכֹ֤ל (As in all) אֲשֶׁר־ (things) שָׁמַ֙עְנוּ֙ (we listened) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses), כֵּ֖ן (so) נִשְׁמַ֣ע (we will listen) אֵלֶ֑יךָ (to you). רַ֠ק (Only) יִֽהְיֶ֞ה (may be) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God) עִמָּ֔ךְ (with you) כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) הָיָ֖ה (He was) עִם־ (with) מֹשֶֽׁה׃ (Moses). 18  כָּל־ (Any) אִ֞ישׁ (man) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יַמְרֶ֣ה (rebels) אֶת־ (-) פִּ֗יךָ (against your command) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִשְׁמַ֧ע (does heed) אֶת־ (-) דְּבָרֶ֛יךָ (your words) לְכֹ֥ל (in all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) תְּצַוֶּ֖נּוּ (you command him) יוּמָ֑ת (shall be put to death). רַ֖ק (Only) חֲזַ֥ק (be strong) וֶאֱמָֽץ׃פ (and be of good courage).
