Ezekiel 48:15
Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

But the five thousand that remain in the breadth over against the five and twenty thousand, shall be a profane place for the city for dwelling, and for suburbs and the city shall be in the midst thereof.

a profane.

Ezekiel 22:26 Her priests have despised my law, and have defiled my sanctuaries: they have put no difference between holy and profane: nor have distinguished between the polluted and the clean: and they have turned away their eyes from my sabbaths, and I was profaned in the midst of them.

Ezekiel 42:20 By the four winds he measured the wall thereof on every side round about, five hundred cubits and five hundred cubits broad, making a separation between the sanctuary and the place of the people.

Ezekiel 44:23 And they shall teach my people the difference between holy and profane, and shew them how to discern between clean and unclean.

Ezekiel 45:6 And you shall appoint the possession of the city five thousand broad, and five and twenty thousand long, according to the separation of the sanctuary, for the whole house of Israel.

for the city.

25,000 square reeds, or near fifty square miles, was divided into three parts from north to south (see on ch.

Ezekiel 45:1 And when you shall begin to divide the land by lot, separate ye firstfruits to the Lord, a portion of the land to be holy, in length twenty-five thousand and in breadth ten thousand: it shall be holy in all the borders thereof round about.

): a portion on the north of

10,000 reeds in width, and

25,000 in length, for the priests, in the midst of which was the sanctuary or temple, surrounded by a wall

500 reeds square, (ver.

Ezekiel 45:9 Thus saith the Lord God: Let it suffice you, O princes of Israel: cease from iniquity and robberies, and execute judgment and justice, separate your confines from my people, saith the Lord God.

,

Ezekiel 45:10 You shall have just balances, and a just ephi, and a just bate.

; see on ch.

Ezekiel 42:15 Now when he had made an end of measuring the inner house, he brought me out by the way of the gate that looked toward the east: and he measured it on every side round about.

;) next to this another portion of the same dimensions for the Levites, (ver.

Ezekiel 42:13 And he said to me: The chambers of the north, and the chambers of the south, which are before the separate building: they are holy chambers, in which the priests shall eat, that approach to the Lord into the holy of holies: there they shall lay the most holy things, and the offering for sin, and for trespass: for it is a holy place.

,

Ezekiel 42:14 And when the priests shall have entered in, they shall not go out of the holy places into the outward court: but there they shall lay their vestments, wherein they minister, for they are holy: and they shall put on other garments, and so they shall go forth to the people.

;) and on the south another portion of the same length, but only

5,000 reeds in breadth, for the city (ver.

Ezekiel 42:15 Now when he had made an end of measuring the inner house, he brought me out by the way of the gate that looked toward the east: and he measured it on every side round about.

.) The city was situated in the midst of this portion, being

4,500 reeds, or about nine miles square, (see on ver.

30,) having a suburb of

250 reeds, or about half a mile, on each side, (ver.

Ezekiel 42:17 And he measured toward the north five hundred reeds with the measuring reed round about.

.) leaving

10,000 reeds or nearly ten miles, on the east side, and the same on the west side, for the profit of those who serve the city out of all the tribes, (ver.

Ezekiel 42:18 And towards the south he measured five hundred reeds with the measuring reed round about.

,

Ezekiel 42:19 And toward the west he measured five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed.

.) On the east and west sides of this square of

25,000 reeds, is the portion of the prince; each of which, estimating the breadth of the land at

150 miles, would form a square of fifty miles. Thus the whole plan of the division of the country, laying out of the city, temple, and all its appendages, is perfectly regular and uniform; and would therefore convey to the minds of the Jews the most complete idea they were capable of conceiving of the most perfect church, commonwealth, city, temple, and conveniences, on the largest and grandest scale for the Divine worship; and it doubtless ultimately points out the land of Immanuel, the city of the New Jerusalem, and his temple, the Christian church, the house of the living God.

1 Timothy 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
