While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately. "Tell us," they said, "when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?" While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,East of Jerusalem, the Mount of Olives overlooked the temple mount and the city whose coming judgment Jesus had just announced. Jesus had entered Jerusalem from this ridge only days earlier, and He would later ascend from it. Zechariah foretells that the Lord will stand on the Mount of Olives when He comes in glory, giving this setting particular significance for Jesus’ teaching about Jerusalem, judgment, and His return. Away from the crowds, the disciples sought fuller understanding of words that had deeply troubled them. Mat 17:19 Afterward the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked,… “Tell us,” they said, Their question arose from Jesus’ declaration that the temple would be utterly destroyed. The disciples understood that such an event would mark a decisive act of divine judgment and sought to know how it related to the fulfillment of God’s kingdom. Mrk 13:4 Tell us, when will these things happen?… “when will these things happen, “These things” includes the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem, fulfilled in A.D. 70 when Roman armies devastated the city. Jesus’ answer also reaches beyond that immediate judgment to events connected with the consummation of the age. Luk 21:7 “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen?… and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?” The disciples connected the overthrow of the temple with Christ’s royal appearing and the completion of God’s redemptive plan.
