Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, and Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day. And Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs. Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision,God established circumcision as the enduring physical sign of His covenant with Abraham (Genesis 17:10–14). Every male among Abraham’s descendants and household was to bear this sign, identifying the covenant family as belonging to the Lord. Circumcision did not earn God’s promises; Abraham had already been counted righteous by faith (Genesis 15:6). It called those who received it to live as a people set apart to God. The later biblical call for circumcision of the heart shows that outward obedience was meant to reflect inward devotion (Deuteronomy 10:16; Romans 2:28–29). Gen 17:10-11 This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you,… and Abraham became the father of Isaac Isaac was born by God’s direct fulfillment of His promise to Abraham and Sarah in their old age (Genesis 21:1–3). Although Abraham had other sons, God appointed Isaac, whose name means “laughter,” as the heir through whom the covenant line would continue (Genesis 17:19–21). Isaac’s birth demonstrated that the promised nation would arise by God’s power rather than human ability. Through Isaac, the promise of blessing for all nations moved forward toward Christ. Gen 21:1-3 Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said… and circumcised him on the eighth day. Abraham obeyed God by circumcising Isaac on the eighth day after his birth (Genesis 21:4), according to the command given before Isaac was conceived (Genesis 17:12). The practice was later incorporated into the Law of Moses (Leviticus 12:3). Abraham’s obedience showed that the child of promise was to be raised within the covenant God had established. Gen 21:4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised… And Isaac became the father of Jacob, God confirmed the covenant promise through Jacob rather than Esau, declaring before their birth that the older would serve the younger (Genesis 25:23). Jacob later received the name Israel after wrestling with God, and the Lord personally reaffirmed to him the promises first given to Abraham and Isaac: descendants, land, and blessing to the nations (Genesis 28:13–15; 32:28). Gen 25:21-26 Later, Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife… and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs. Jacob’s twelve sons became the heads of the tribes of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin. Their family became the nation God had promised to Abraham. Stephen’s summary traces Israel’s history back to God’s covenant faithfulness, showing that the people of Israel existed by divine promise long before the temple, the land, or the Mosaic Law. Gen 35:22-26 While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in… Persons / Places / Events 1.
