They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile the witnesses laid their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. The Law directed that certain offenders, including blasphemers, be taken outside the camp or city for execution (Leviticus 24:14; Numbers 15:35–36). Jerusalem’s leaders treated Stephen as a blasphemer because he proclaimed Jesus as the risen Son of Man and exposed their resistance to the Holy Spirit. Their action also recalls Jesus’ suffering outside the city gate, bearing rejection in order to sanctify His people (John 19:17–20; Hebrews 13:12–13). The city that had rejected the prophets and crucified the Messiah now cast out one of Christ’s faithful witnesses. Act 14:19 Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium… and began to stone him. Stoning was prescribed for grave covenant offenses, and the witnesses were required to cast the first stones (Deuteronomy 17:6–7). Stephen’s death appears to have been a violent outburst by the council rather than a measured legal proceeding, for they had been enraged by his vision of the exalted Christ. Yet the cruelty of his death could not overturn the truth of his testimony. Stephen became the first recorded Christian martyr, following his Lord in suffering at the hands of those who claimed to defend God’s honor. Their readiness to participate exposed the hardness of hearts that had heard Stephen’s Spirit-filled defense and seen his face “like the face of an angel” (Acts 6:15). Saul watched over the garments and approved of Stephen’s death (Acts 8:1). A zealous Pharisee trained in the traditions of Israel, Saul believed he was serving God by opposing the followers of Jesus (Philippians 3:5–6). Stephen’s witness, prayers, and death would stand in sharp contrast to Saul’s later calling as an apostle of the Christ he had persecuted. The presence of Saul at the first martyrdom introduces the man through whom the risen Jesus would carry the gospel far beyond Jerusalem, displaying the transforming power of divine grace (Acts 9:1–19; 1 Timothy 1:13–16).
