1“Now these are the commandments, statutes, and judgments, which the LORD your God commanded me to teach you, that you might obey them in the land that you go to possess: 2That you might fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments, which I command you, your son, and your son's son, all the days of your life; so that your days may be prolonged. 3Hear, O Israel, and be diligent to do them; that it may be well with you, and that you may prosper and increase greatly, as the LORD God of your fathers has promised you, in the land that flows with milk and honey. 4“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: 5And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6And these commands that I give you today, shall be in your heart: 7And you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk along the road, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and as frontlets between your eyes. 9And you shall write them upon your doorposts of your house, and on your gates. 10“And when the LORD your God brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers - to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob - to give you great and prosperous cities, which you did not build, 11And houses full of all good things, which you did not produce, and wells which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees, which you did not plant; when you shall have eaten and are full; 12Then beware, that you do not forget the LORD, Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. 13You must fear the LORD your God, and serve Him, and swear by His name. 14You must not follow after other gods, the gods of the people who are around you; 15For the LORD your God, Who lives among you, is a jealous God, so that the anger of the LORD your God is not kindled against you, and He wipes you off the face of the earth. 16“Do not put the LORD your God to the test, as you did in Massah. 17You must diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and His testimonies, and His statutes, which He has commanded you. 18And you must do what is right and good in the eyes of the LORD: that it may be well with you, and that you may go in and possess the good land which the LORD promised to your fathers, 19To drive out all your enemies from before you, as the LORD has spoken. 20“And in the future, when your son asks you, ‘What do the testimonies, statutes, and judgments mean, that the LORD our God has commanded you?’ 21Then you shall tell your son, ‘We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand: 22And the LORD did signs and wonders, great and severe, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and all his household, before our eyes: 23And He brought us out from there, so that He might bring us here, to give us the land which He swore to our fathers. 24And the LORD commanded us to obey all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, always for our own good, and for our survival, as it is this day. 25And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as He has commanded us.’ Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser.
