1These are the (twelve) sons of Israel (Jacob): Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, 2Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 3The sons of Judah were: Er, Onan, and Shelah, these first three were born to him by the daughter of Shua, the Canaanitess. And Er, Judah’s first-born, was evil in the eyes of the LORD; and He killed him. 4And Tamar, his daughter-in-law, bore to Judah Perez and Zerah, for a total of five sons. 5The sons of Perez were: Hezron, and Hamul. 6And the five sons of Zerah were: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara. 7And the sons of Carmi: Achar, who troubled Israel, when he transgressed regarding the devoted (accursed) thing (Joshua 7:1). 8And the son of Ethan was: Azariah. 9The sons born to Hezron were: Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai (Caleb). 10And Ram fathered Amminadab; and Amminadab fathered Nahshon, prince (leader) of the tribe of Judah; 11And Nahshon fathered Salma, and Salma fathered Boaz, 12And Boaz fathered Obed, and Obed fathered Jesse, 13And to Jesse were born, Eliab (his first-born), then Abinadab, his second, Shimea, his third, 14Nethanel, his fourth, Raddai, his fifth, 15Ozem, his sixth, David, his seventh; 16And their two sisters were Zeruiah, and Abigail. And Zeruiah had three sons: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel. 17And Abigail bore Amasa to Jether, the Ishmaelite. The “Caleb, the son of Hezron” (V18) does not appear in the preceding genealogy of Hezron; but appears to be Hezron’s third son, which is rendered “Chelubai” in verse 9. “(Caleb)” was inserted at the end of verse 9 for clarity. There seems to be no problem with the names of Caleb’s sons - Jesher, Shobab, Ardon (evidently born to his wife, Azubah; and Hur, whose mother was Caleb’s concubine. the question is about two women named Jerioth and Ephrath. Some texts suggest that Jerioth was Caleb’s concubine, and bore his son, Hur; but others suggest that Jerioth was Caleb’s daughter, and that Ephrath was his concubine, and mother of Hur (V19). 18And Caleb, son of Hezron had children by Azubah, his wife, and by Jerioth; her sons are these: Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. 19And when Azubah had died, Caleb took to him Ephrath, who bore him Hur. 20And Hur fathered Uri, and Uri fathered Bezalel. 21And later, when he was sixty years old, Hezron married the daughter of Machir, the father of Gilead; and she bore him Segub. 22And Segub fathered Jair, who ruled twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead. 23But Geshur, and Aram captured the towns of Jair, with Kenath, and its sixty surrounding towns. All these were the descendants of Machir, the father of Gilead. 24And after Hezron had died in Caleb-ephrathah, then Abijah, Hezron's wife, bore him Ashhur, the father of Tekoa. 25And the sons of Jerahmeel, the firstborn of Hezron, were: Ram, the first-born, then Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. 26Jerahmeel also had another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam. 27And the sons of Ram were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker. 28And the sons of Onam were Shammai, and Jada. And the sons of Shammai were Nadab, and Abishur. 29And the name of the wife of Abishur was Abihail, and she bore him Ahban, and Molid. 30And the sons of Nadab were Seled, and Appaim; but Seled died without children. 31And the son of Appaim was Ishi, the father of Sheshan, the father of Ahlai. 32And the sons of Jada, the brother of Shammai were: Jether, and Jonathan; and Jether died without children. 33And the sons of Jonathan were Peleth and Zaza. These were the descendants of Jerahmeel. 34Now Sheshan had no sons, only daughters. And Sheshan had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Jarha. 35And Sheshan gave his daughter to Jarha, his servant, in marriage; and she bore to him Attai. 36And Attai fathered Nathan, and Nathan fathered Zabad, 37And Zabad fathered Ephlal, and Ephlal fathered Obed, 38And Obed fathered Jehu, and Jehu fathered Azariah, 39And Azariah fathered Helez, and Helez fathered Eleasah, 40And Eleasah fathered Sismai, and Sismai fathered Shallum, 41And Shallum fathered Jekamiah, and Jekamiah fathered Elishama. 42Now the descendants of Caleb, the brother of Jerahmeel, included Mesha, his first-born, who was the father of Ziph; and his son Mareshah, the father of Hebron. 43And the sons of Hebron were Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema. 44And Shema fathered Raham, the father of Jorkeam; and Rekem fathered Shammai. 45And the son of Shammai was Maon; and Maon was the father of Beth-zur. 46And Ephah, Caleb's concubine, bore Haran, Moza, and Gazez; and Haran fathered Gazez. 47And the sons of Jahdai were: Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, Shaaph. 48Maachah, Caleb's concubine, bore Sheber, and Tirhanah. 49She bore also Shaaph, the father of Madmannah; Sheva, the father of Machbenah; and the father of Gibea; and the daughter of Caleb was Achsah. 50These were the sons of Caleb, son of Hur, the first-born of Ephrathah: Shobal, the father of Kiriath-jearim; 51Salma, the father of Bethlehem; Hareph, the father of Beth-gader. 52And Shobal, the father of Kiriath-jearim had sons: Haroeh, and half of the Menuhoth (Manahethites). 53And the families of Kiriath-jearim: the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites, the Mishraites; of them came the Zorathites, and the Eshtaolites. 54The sons of Salma: Bethlehem, and the Netophathites, Ataroth, the house of (Joab) Atroth-beth-joab, and half of the Manahethites, the Zorites. 55And the families of the scribes who dwelt at Jabez: the Tirathites, Shimeathites, and Sucathites. These are the Kenites who came of Hammath, the father of the house of Rechab. Reader-Friendly Bible: Purple Letter Edition © 2024 by Jim Musser. Used by Permission. All rights Reserved. Bible Hub |
