1Now these were the sons of David, who were born to him in Hebron; the first-born was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second, Daniel, of Abigail the Carmelitess; 2The third, Absalom, son of Maachah, daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur; the fourth, Adonijah, son of Haggith; 3The fifth, Shephatiah, of Abital; the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah, his wife. 4These six were born to him in Hebron; and he reigned there seven years and six months; and then he reigned in Jerusalem for thirty-three years. 5And these four sons were born to him in Jerusalem: Shimei, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon, of Bath-shua (Bathsheba), daughter of Ammiel; 6Plus these nine: Ibhar, Elishama, Eliphelet, 7Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 8Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet. 9These were all the sons of David, beside the sons of the concubines; and Tamar was their sister. 10And Solomon's (line of male descendants were): his son was Rehoboam; his son was Abijah; his son was Asa; his son was Jehoshaphat, 11His son was Joram; his son was Ahaziah; his son was Joash; 12His son was Amaziah; his son was Azariah; his son was Jotham; 13His son was Ahaz; his son was Hezekiah; his son was Manasseh; 14 His son was Amon; and his son was Josiah. 15And the sons of Josiah were, in the order of their birth: Johanan, Jehoiakim (Eliakim), Zedekiah, and Shallum (Jehoahaz). 16And the male descendants of Jehoiakim: Jehoiachin (Jeconiah), his son; and Zedekiah, his son. The word “Assir” appears in verse 17 of the KJV, RV and ARV translations. It may refer to a son of Jeconiah; or an adjective modifying Jeconiah (some translations render it “the captive” or “the prisoner”); so it may not refer to a son of Jehoiachin (Jeconiah); but rather to the imprisonment of Jehoiachin (Jeconiah). 17And the sons of Jehoiachin (Jeconiah), the captive (Assir): Shealtiel, his son; 18Malchiram also Pedaiah, Shenazar, Jekamiah, Hoshama, and Nedabiah. 19And the sons of Pedaiah were, Zerubbabel, and Shimei; and the sons of Zerubbabel: Meshullam, Hananiah; and Shelomith was their sister: 20And there were also five other sons (of Zerubbabel): Hashubah, Ohel, Berechiah, Hasadiah, and Jushabhesed. 21The sons of Hananiah were Pelatiah and Jeshaiah; and the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of Obadiah, the sons of Shechaniah. 22And the sons of Shechaniah; Shemaiah and his five sons, Hattush, Igal, Bariah, Neariah, and Shaphat. 23And the three sons of Neariah: Elioenai, Hezekiah, and Azrikam. 24And the seven sons of Elioenai were Hodaviah, Eliashib, Pelaiah, Akkub, Johanan, Dalaiah, and Anani. Verse 3:21, with its “sons of ___” being repeated 4 times, is difficult to interpret with any degree of certainty. Some believe that the four referred to in these four repeating occurrences of “sons of ___”, Rephaiah, Aman, Obadiah, and Shechaniah, should be grouped with the preceding two sons of Hananiah previously identified, Pelatiah and Jesaiah; as likely their four brothers.
