Hurry, O LORD, to Help Me!

For the choirmaster.

Intended for use in Israel’s public worship, the psalm was entrusted to the leader responsible for directing sacred music. Its urgent petition gave the congregation words for seeking God’s help in distress.

Psa 4:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.…
Psa 5:1 For the choirmaster, to be accompanied by flutes.…
Psa 6:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments,…

Of David.

David wrote from a life marked by danger, opposition, and dependence on the Lord. His appeal reflects the confidence of one who knew God as his defender and deliverer.

Psa 3:1 A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.…
Psa 51:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. When Nathan the prophet…
Psa 18:1 For the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD…

To bring remembrance.

Used as a memorial prayer, it called God’s people to remember their need for His help and His past faithfulness in rescuing them.

Psa 38:1 A Psalm of David, for remembrance. O LORD, do not rebuke me…
Num 10:10 And on your joyous occasions, your appointed feasts,…
Lev 24:7 And you are to place pure frankincense near each row,…

Make haste, O God, to deliver me!

David faced immediate trouble and appealed to God for swift rescue. His request rests on God’s power to save those who call upon Him.

Psa 31:2 Incline Your ear to me; come quickly to my rescue.…
Psa 142:6 Listen to my cry, for I am brought quite low.…
Psa 69:17 Hide not Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress.…

Hurry, O LORD, to help me!

Addressing the covenant God of Israel, David repeats his plea with urgency. The cry expresses trust that the LORD remains faithful to His people in their need.

Psa 40:13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; hurry, O LORD…
Psa 38:22 Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.
Psa 141:1 A Psalm of David. I call upon You, O LORD;…

May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded;

David asks God to frustrate those pursuing his death, whether enemies within Israel or hostile nations. Their schemes would fail, and their violence would bring disgrace upon them rather than upon the king God had chosen.

Psa 35:4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame;…
Psa 40:14 May those who seek my life be ashamed and confounded;…
Psa 71:13 May the accusers of my soul be ashamed and consumed;…

may those who wish me harm be repelled and humiliated.

Those who delight in David’s downfall are to be driven back in defeat. The request rests on God’s justice: the wicked who plot harm against the righteous should not succeed, but should bear the shame of their rebellion.

Psa 129:5 May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame.
Psa 6:10 All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed;…
Psa 9:3 When my enemies retreat, they stumble and perish before You.

May those who say, “Aha, aha!”

David’s enemies mocked his distress and celebrated what they believed would be his downfall. Their taunt revealed open contempt for the Lord’s servant and confidence that evil would prevail.

Psa 40:15 May those who say to me, “Aha, aha!” be appalled…
Psa 35:21 They gape at me and say, “Aha, aha! Our eyes have seen!”
Psa 35:25 Let them not say in their hearts, “Aha, just what we wanted”…

retreat because of their shame.

David asks God to overturn their schemes, driving them back in disgrace. Those who sought to humiliate the righteous would bear the dishonor they intended for him.

Psa 129:5 May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame.
Psa 6:10 All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed;…
Psa 35:4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame;…

May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;

Those who earnestly seek the Lord find their joy in His presence, character, and faithful care. Israel repeatedly experienced such joy when God delivered them from danger, sustained them in the wilderness, and restored them after exile. Their gladness rested not on changing circumstances but on the certainty that God hears, saves, and keeps His promises.

Psa 105:3 Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek…
Psa 32:11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous ones;…
Psa 22:26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the LORD…

may those who love Your salvation

God’s salvation includes His deliverance of His people from enemies and distress, while ultimately pointing to the redemption accomplished through Christ. Those who know His saving mercy treasure it as God’s gracious work rather than human achievement.

Psa 13:5 But I have trusted in Your loving devotion;…
Psa 119:174 I long for Your salvation, O LORD, and Your law…
Isa 25:9 And in that day it will be said, “Surely this is our God;…

always say, “Let God be magnified!”

The proper response to God’s salvation is continual praise. God is magnified—exalted and honored—when His greatness, sovereignty, authority, and faithfulness are openly acknowledged by His people, individually and together.

Psa 40:16 May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;…
Psa 34:3 Magnify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together.
Psa 69:30 I will praise God’s name in song and exalt Him…

But I am poor and needy;

David openly acknowledges his weakness and helplessness. Though king of Israel, he knows that neither rank nor strength can secure him against danger. His need is not merely material but encompasses the distress and vulnerability that drive him to depend wholly on God.

Psa 86:1 A prayer of David. Incline Your ear, O LORD, and answer me,…
Psa 109:22 For I am poor and needy; my heart is wounded within me.
Psa 72:12 For he will deliver the needy who cry out…

hurry to me, O God.

The danger is immediate, and David asks God to act without delay. His appeal rests on the certainty that God sees his circumstances and is able to intervene.

Psa 40:13 Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me; hurry, O LORD…
Psa 143:7 Answer me quickly, O LORD; my spirit fails.…
Psa 102:2 Do not hide Your face from me in my day of distress.…

You are my help and my deliverer;

God alone sustains David in trouble and rescues him from those who seek his harm. The words reflect confidence born from God’s previous faithfulness to preserve His servant.

Psa 37:40 The LORD helps and delivers them; He rescues…
2Sa 22:2 He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress…
Psa 54:4 Surely God is my helper; the Lord is my sustainer…

O LORD, do not delay.

David calls upon the covenant God of Israel, trusting Him to fulfill His promises. The urgent request closes the psalm with dependence on the Lord’s timely deliverance.

Psa 40:17 But I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me.…
Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;…
Isa 46:13 I am bringing My righteousness near; it is not far away…
