1 A prayer of Moses, the man of God. O Lord, you have been our protector through all generations! Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. A prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.
2 Even before the mountains came into existence, or you brought the world into being, you were the eternal God. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
3 You make mankind return to the dust, and say, |Return, O people!| You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man!” You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.”
4 Yes, in your eyes a thousand years are like yesterday that quickly passes, or like one of the divisions of the nighttime. For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.
5 You bring their lives to an end and they |fall asleep.| In the morning they are like the grass that sprouts up; You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death— they are like the new grass of the morning:
6 in the morning it glistens and sprouts up; at evening time it withers and dries up. in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered.
7 Yes, we are consumed by your anger; we are terrified by your wrath. For we are brought to an end by your anger; by your wrath we are dismayed. We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation.
8 You are aware of our sins; you even know about our hidden sins. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.
9 Yes, throughout all our days we experience your raging fury; the years of our lives pass quickly, like a sigh. For all our days pass away under your wrath; we bring our years to an end like a sigh. All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan.
10 The days of our lives add up to seventy years, or eighty, if one is especially strong. But even one's best years are marred by trouble and oppression. Yes, they pass quickly and we fly away. The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.
11 Who can really fathom the intensity of your anger? Your raging fury causes people to fear you. Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you? If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due.
12 So teach us to consider our mortality, so that we might live wisely. So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
13 Turn back toward us, O LORD! How long must this suffering last? Have pity on your servants! Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! Relent, LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants.
14 Satisfy us in the morning with your loyal love! Then we will shout for joy and be happy all our days! Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
15 Make us happy in proportion to the days you have afflicted us, in proportion to the years we have experienced trouble! Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble.
16 May your servants see your work! May their sons see your majesty! Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children.
17 May our sovereign God extend his favor to us! Make our endeavors successful! Yes, make them successful! Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands! May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.
