1 I cry out to God; yes, I shout. Oh, that God would listen to me! I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, and he will hear me. For the director of music. For Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A psalm. I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me.
2 When I was in deep trouble, I searched for the Lord. All night long I prayed, with hands lifted toward heaven, but my soul was not comforted. In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted. When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not be comforted.
3 I think of God, and I moan, overwhelmed with longing for his help. Interlude When I remember God, I moan; when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah I remembered you, God, and I groaned; I meditated, and my spirit grew faint.
4 You don’t let me sleep. I am too distressed even to pray! You hold my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak. You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak.
5 I think of the good old days, long since ended, I consider the days of old, the years long ago. I thought about the former days, the years of long ago;
6 when my nights were filled with joyful songs. I search my soul and ponder the difference now. I said, “Let me remember my song in the night; let me meditate in my heart.” Then my spirit made a diligent search: I remembered my songs in the night. My heart meditated and my spirit asked:
7 Has the Lord rejected me forever? Will he never again be kind to me? “Will the Lord spurn forever, and never again be favorable? “Will the Lord reject forever? Will he never show his favor again?
8 Is his unfailing love gone forever? Have his promises permanently failed? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time? Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time?
9 Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he slammed the door on his compassion? Interlude Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah Has God forgotten to be merciful? Has he in anger withheld his compassion?”
10 And I said, “This is my fate; the Most High has turned his hand against me.” Then I said, “I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High.” Then I thought, “To this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
11 But then I recall all you have done, O LORD; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
12 They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”
13 O God, your ways are holy. Is there any god as mighty as you? Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? Your ways, God, are holy. What god is as great as our God?
14 You are the God of great wonders! You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations. You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples. You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.
15 By your strong arm, you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. Interlude You with your arm redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
16 When the Red Sea saw you, O God, its waters looked and trembled! The sea quaked to its very depths. When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid; indeed, the deep trembled. The waters saw you, God, the waters saw you and writhed; the very depths were convulsed.
17 The clouds poured down rain; the thunder rumbled in the sky. Your arrows of lightning flashed. The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder; your arrows flashed on every side. The clouds poured down water, the heavens resounded with thunder; your arrows flashed back and forth.
18 Your thunder roared from the whirlwind; the lightning lit up the world! The earth trembled and shook. The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled and shook. Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked.
19 Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters— a pathway no one knew was there! Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen. Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen.
20 You led your people along that road like a flock of sheep, with Moses and Aaron as their shepherds. You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron. You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
