1 A psalm by Asaph. Certainly God is good to Israel, and to those whose motives are pure! Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
2 But as for me, my feet almost slipped; my feet almost slid out from under me. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.
3 For I envied those who are proud, as I observed the prosperity of the wicked. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 For they suffer no pain; their bodies are strong and well-fed. For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.
5 They are immune to the trouble common to men; they do not suffer as other men do. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.
6 Arrogance is their necklace, and violence their clothing. Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.
7 Their prosperity causes them to do wrong; their thoughts are sinful. Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.
8 They mock and say evil things; they proudly threaten violence. They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.
9 They speak as if they rule in heaven, and lay claim to the earth. They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore they have more than enough food to eat, and even suck up the water of the sea. Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.
11 They say, |How does God know what we do? Is the sovereign one aware of what goes on?| And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” They say, “How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?”
12 Take a good look! This is what the wicked are like, those who always have it so easy and get richer and richer. Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. This is what the wicked are like— always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
13 I concluded, |Surely in vain I have kept my motives pure and maintained a pure lifestyle. All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.
14 I suffer all day long, and am punished every morning.| For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.
15 If I had publicized these thoughts, I would have betrayed your loyal followers. If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed the generation of your children. If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children.
16 When I tried to make sense of this, it was troubling to me. But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply
17 Then I entered the precincts of God's temple, and understood the destiny of the wicked. until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.
18 Surely you put them in slippery places; you bring them down to ruin. Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.
19 How desolate they become in a mere moment! Terrifying judgments make their demise complete! How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!
20 They are like a dream after one wakes up. O Lord, when you awake you will despise them. Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms. They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.
21 Yes, my spirit was bitter, and my insides felt sharp pain. When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,
22 I was ignorant and lacked insight; I was as senseless as an animal before you. I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
23 But I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.
24 You guide me by your wise advice, and then you will lead me to a position of honor. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom do I have in heaven but you? I desire no one but you on earth. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart may grow weak, but God always protects my heart and gives me stability. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
27 Yes, look! Those far from you die; you destroy everyone who is unfaithful to you. For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
28 But as for me, God's presence is all I need. I have made the sovereign LORD my shelter, as I declare all the things you have done. But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.
