1 A psalm for Asaph. How good is God to Israel, to them that are of a right heart! Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.
2 But my feet were almost moved; my steps had well nigh slipped. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold.
3 Because I had a zeal on occasion of the wicked, seeing the prosperity of sinners. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 For there is no regard to their death, nor is there strength in their stripes. For they have no pangs until death; their bodies are fat and sleek. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.
5 They are not in the labour of men: neither shall they be scourged like other men. They are not in trouble as others are; they are not stricken like the rest of mankind. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.
6 Therefore pride hath held them fast: they are covered with their iniquity and their wickedness. Therefore pride is their necklace; violence covers them as a garment. Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.
7 Their iniquity hath come forth, as it were from fatness: they have passed into the affection of the heart. Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies. From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits.
8 They have thought and spoken wickedness: they have spoken iniquity on high. They scoff and speak with malice; loftily they threaten oppression. They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.
9 They have set their mouth against heaven: and their tongue hath passed through the earth. They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue struts through the earth. Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore will my people return here and full days shall be found in them. Therefore his people turn back to them, and find no fault in them. Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.
11 And they said: How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? And they say, “How can God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?” They say, “How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?”
12 Behold these are sinners; and yet abounding in the world they have obtained riches. Behold, these are the wicked; always at ease, they increase in riches. This is what the wicked are like— always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
13 And I said: Then have I in vain justified my heart, and washed my hands among the innocent. All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence. Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.
14 And I have been scourged all the day; and my chastisement hath been in the mornings. For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning. All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.
15 If I said: I will speak thus; behold I should condemn the generation of thy children. If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed the generation of your children. If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children.
16 I studied that I might know this thing, it is a labour in my sight: But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply
17 Until I go into the sanctuary of God, and understand concerning their last ends. until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I discerned their end. till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.
18 But indeed for deceits thou hast put it to them: when they were lifted up thou hast cast them down. Truly you set them in slippery places; you make them fall to ruin. Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin.
19 How are they brought to desolation? they have suddenly ceased to be: they have perished by reason of their iniquity. How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors!
20 As the dream of them that awake, O Lord; so in thy city thou shalt bring their image to nothing. Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms. They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.
21 For my heart hath been inflamed, and my reins have been changed: When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,
22 and I am brought to nothing, and I knew not. I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
23 I am become as a beast before thee: and I am always with thee. Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.
24 Thou hast held me by my right hand; and by thy will thou hast conducted me, and with thy glory thou hast received me. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 For what have I in heaven? and besides thee what do I desire upon earth? Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26 For thee my flesh and my heart hath fainted away: thou art the God of my heart, and the God that is my portion for ever. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
27 For behold they that go far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that are disloyal to thee. For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
28 But it is good for me to adhere to my God, to put my hope in the Lord God: That I may declare all thy praises, in the gates of the daughter of Sion. But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.
