1 For David himself. Judge thou, O Lord, them that wrong me : overthrow them that fight against me. Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me! Of David. Contend, LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me.
2 Take hold of arms and shield : and rise up to help me. Take hold of shield and buckler and rise for my help! Take up shield and armor; arise and come to my aid.
3 Bring out the sword, and shut up the way against them that persecute me : say to my soul : I am thy salvation. Draw the spear and javelin against my pursuers! Say to my soul, “I am your salvation!” Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to me, “I am your salvation.”
4 Let them be confounded and ashamed that seek after my soul. Let them be turned back and be confounded that devise against me. Let them be put to shame and dishonor who seek after my life! Let them be turned back and disappointed who devise evil against me! May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay.
5 Let them become as dust before the wind : and let the angel of the Lord straiten them. Let them be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away! May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away;
6 Let their way become dark and slippery; and let the angel of the Lord pursue them. Let their way be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them! may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.
7 For without cause they have hidden their net for me unto destruction : without cause they have upbraided my soul. For without cause they hid their net for me; without cause they dug a pit for my life. Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me,
8 Let the snare which he knoweth not come upon him : and let the net which he hath hidden catch him : and let the net which he hath hidden catch him : and into that very snare let them fall. Let destruction come upon him when he does not know it! And let the net that he hid ensnare him; let him fall into it—to his destruction! may ruin overtake them by surprise— may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.
9 But my soul shall rejoice in the Lord; and shall be delighted in his salvation. Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD, exulting in his salvation. Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation.
10 All my bones shall say : Lord, who is like to thee? Who deliverest the poor from the hand of them that are stronger than he; the needy and the poor from them that strip him. All my bones shall say, “O LORD, who is like you, delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him, the poor and needy from him who robs him?” My whole being will exclaim, “Who is like you, LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.”
11 Unjust witnesses rising up have asked me things I knew not. Malicious witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I do not know. Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about.
12 They repaid me evil for good : to the depriving me of my soul. They repay me evil for good; my soul is bereft. They repay me evil for good and leave me like one bereaved.
13 But as for me, when they were troublesome to me, I was clothed with haircloth. I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer shall be turned into my bosom. But I, when they were sick— I wore sackcloth; I afflicted myself with fasting; I prayed with head bowed on my chest. Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
14 As a neighbour and as an own brother, so did I please : as one mourning and sorrowful so was I humbled. I went about as though I grieved for my friend or my brother; as one who laments his mother, I bowed down in mourning. I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother.
15 But they rejoiced against me, and came together : scourges were gathered together upon me, and I knew not. But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered; they gathered together against me; wretches whom I did not know tore at me without ceasing; But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; assailants gathered against me without my knowledge. They slandered me without ceasing.
16 They were separated, and repented not : they tempted me, they scoffed at me with scorn : they gnashed upon me with their teeth. like profane mockers at a feast, they gnash at me with their teeth. Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me.
17 Lord, when wilt thou look upon me? rescue thou soul from their malice : my only one from the lions. How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions! How long, Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their ravages, my precious life from these lions.
18 I will give thanks to thee in a great church; I will praise thee in a strong people. I will thank you in the great congregation; in the mighty throng I will praise you. I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among the throngs I will praise you.
19 Let not them that are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me : who have hated me without cause, and wink with the eyes. Let not those rejoice over me who are wrongfully my foes, and let not those wink the eye who hate me without cause. Do not let those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; do not let those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye.
20 For they spoke indeed peaceably to me; and speaking in the anger of the earth they devised guile. For they do not speak peace, but against those who are quiet in the land they devise words of deceit. They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land.
21 And they opened their mouth wide against me; they said : Well done, well done, our eyes have seen it. They open wide their mouths against me; they say, “Aha, Aha! Our eyes have seen it!” They sneer at me and say, “Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it.”
22 Thou hast seen, O Lord, be not thou silent : O Lord, depart not from me. You have seen, O LORD; be not silent! O Lord, be not far from me! LORD, you have seen this; do not be silent. Do not be far from me, Lord.
23 Arise, and be attentive to my judgment : to my cause, my God, and my Lord. Awake and rouse yourself for my vindication, for my cause, my God and my Lord! Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord.
24 Judge me, O Lord my God according to thy justice, and let them not rejoice over me. Vindicate me, O LORD, my God, according to your righteousness, and let them not rejoice over me! Vindicate me in your righteousness, LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me.
25 Let them not say in their hearts : It is well, it is well, to our mind : neither let them say : We have swallowed him up. Let them not say in their hearts, “Aha, our heart’s desire!” Let them not say, “We have swallowed him up.” Do not let them think, “Aha, just what we wanted!” or say, “We have swallowed him up.”
26 Let them blush : and be ashamed together, who rejoice at my evils. Let them be clothed with confusion and shame, who speak great things against me. Let them be put to shame and disappointed altogether who rejoice at my calamity! Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me! May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace.
27 Let them rejoice and be glad, who are well pleased with my justice, and let them say always : The Lord be magnified, who delights in the peace of his servant. Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, “Great is the LORD, who delights in the welfare of his servant!” May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, “The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant.”
28 Any my tongue shall meditate thy justice, thy praise all the day long. Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness and of your praise all the day long. My tongue will proclaim your righteousness, your praises all day long.
