1 Paul and Timothy, the servants of Jesus Christ; to all the saints in Christ Jesus, who are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons. 2 Grace be unto you, and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3 I give thanks to my God in every remembrance of you, I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, I thank my God every time I remember you.
4 Always in all my prayers making supplication for you all, with joy; always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy
5 For your communication in the gospel of Christ from the first day until now. because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now,
6 Being confident of this very thing, that he, who hath begun a good work in you, will perfect it unto the day of Christ Jesus. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
7 As it is meet for me to think this for you all, for that I have you in my heart; and that in my bands, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of my joy. It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me.
8 For God is my witness, how I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
9 And this I pray, that your charity may more and more abound in knowledge, and in all understanding: And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,
10 That you may approve the better things, that you may be sincere and without offence unto the day of Christ, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,
11 Filled with the fruit of justice, through Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.
12 Now, brethren, I desire you should know, that the things which have happened to me, have fallen out rather to the furtherance of the gospel: I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel.
13 So that my bands are made manifest in Christ, in all the court, and in all other places; so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.
14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, growing confident by my bands, are much more bold to speak the word of God without fear. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.
15 Some indeed, even out of envy and contention; but some also for good will preach Christ. Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill.
16 Some out of charity, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
17 And some out of contention preach Christ not sincerely: supposing that they raise affliction to my bands. The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. 18 But what then? So that by all means, whether by occasion, or by truth, Christ be preached: in this also I rejoice, yea, and will rejoice. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice, But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,
19 For I know that this shall fall out to me unto salvation, through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.
20 According to my expectation and hope; that in nothing I shall be confounded, but with all confidence, as always, so now also shall Christ be magnified in my body, wither it be by life, or by death. as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
21 For to me, to live is Christ; and to die is gain. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
22 And if to live in the flesh, that is to me the fruit of labour, and what I shall choose I know not. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!
23 But I am straitened between two: having a desire to be dissolved and to be with Christ, a thing by far the better. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
24 But to abide still in the flesh, is needful for you. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account. but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide, and continue with you all, for your furtherance and joy of faith: Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith, Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
26 That your rejoicing may abound in Christ Jesus for me, by my coming to you again. so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus, because of my coming to you again. so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.
27 Only let your conversation be worthy of the gospel of Christ: that, whether I come and see you, or, being absent, may hear of you, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind labouring together for the faith of the gospel. Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel
28 And in nothing be ye terrified by the adversaries: which to them is a cause of perdition, but to you of salvation, and this from God: and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.
29 For unto you it is given for Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him. For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,
30 Having the same conflict as that which you have seen in me, and now have heard of me. engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
