1 All the tax collectors and sinners were approaching to listen to him. Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus.
2 And the Pharisees and scribes were complaining, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
3 So he told them this parable: So he told them this parable: Then Jesus told them this parable:
4 “What man among you, who has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open field and go after the lost one until he finds it? “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?
5 When he has found it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders, And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders
6 and coming home, he calls his friends and neighbors together, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep! ’ And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’
7 I tell you, in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who don’t need repentance. Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
8 “Or what woman who has ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? “Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?
9 When she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found the silver coin I lost! ’ And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’
10 I tell you, in the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents.” Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
11 He also said, “A man had two sons. And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons.
12 The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the estate I have coming to me.’ So he distributed the assets to them. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.
13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered together all he had and traveled to a distant country, where he squandered his estate in foolish living. I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.
19 I’m no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired workers.” ’ I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’
20 So he got up and went to his father. But while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him. And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 22 “But the father told his servants, ‘Quick! Bring out the best robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 29 But he replied to his father, ‘Look, I have been slaving many years for you, and I have never disobeyed your orders, yet you never gave me a goat so that I could celebrate with my friends. but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.
30 But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your assets with prostitutes, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him.’ But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’
31 “ ‘Son,’ he said to him, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. “’My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.
32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ ” It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’” But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”
