1	After the death of Joshua, the children of Israel asked of Yahweh, saying, “Who should go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”	After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel inquired of the LORD, “Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”	After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, “Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Canaanites?”
2	Yahweh said, “Judah shall go up. Behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.”	The LORD said, “Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.”	The LORD answered, “Judah shall go up; I have given the land into their hands.”
3	Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into your lot.” So Simeon went with him.	And Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites. And I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you.” So Simeon went with him.	The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, “Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours.” So the Simeonites went with them.
4	Judah went up, and Yahweh delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand. They struck ten thousand men in Bezek.	Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they defeated 10,000 of them at Bezek.	When Judah attacked, the LORD gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.
5	They found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and they fought against him. They struck the Canaanites and the Perizzites.	They found Adoni-bezek at Bezek and fought against him and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.	It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites.
6	But Adoni-Bezek fled. They pursued him, caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.	Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.	Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
7	Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their big toes cut off, scavenged under my table. As I have done, so God has done to me.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.	And Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.	Then Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
8	The children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, took it, struck it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.	And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire.	The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
9	After that, the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, and in the South, and in the lowland.	And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland.	After that, Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev and the western foothills.
10	Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron. (The name of Hebron before that was Kiriath Arba.) They struck Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.	And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba), and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.	They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath Arba) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.
11	From there he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (The name of Debir before that was Kiriath Sepher.)	From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher.	From there they advanced against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher).
12	Caleb said, “I will give Achsah my daughter as wife to the man who strikes Kiriath Sepher, and takes it.”	And Caleb said, “He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give him Achsah my daughter for a wife.”	And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.”
13	Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it, so he gave him Achsah his daughter as his wife.	And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife.	Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.
14	When she came, she got him to ask her father for a field. She got off her donkey; and Caleb said to her, “What would you like?”	When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?”	One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”
15	She said to him, “Give me a blessing; because you have set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water.” Then Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.	She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.	She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.
16	The children of the Kenite, Moses’ brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and lived with the people.	And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad, and they went and settled with the people.	The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.
17	Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they struck the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. The name of the city was called Hormah.	And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath and devoted it to destruction. So the name of the city was called Hormah.	Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah.
18	Also Judah took Gaza with its border, and Ashkelon with its border, and Ekron with its border.	Judah also captured Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.	Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron—each city with its territory.
19	Yahweh was with Judah, and drove out the inhabitants of the hill country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.	And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had chariots of iron.	The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron.
20	They gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, and he drove the three sons of Anak out of there.	And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he drove out from it the three sons of Anak.	As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak.
21	The children of Benjamin didn’t drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem, but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.	But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.	The Benjamites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.
22	The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and Yahweh was with them.	The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.	Now the tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them.
23	The house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (The name of the city before that was Luz.)	And the house of Joseph scouted out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.)	When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz),
24	The watchers saw a man come out of the city, and they said to him, “Please show us the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.”	And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, “Please show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.”	the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.”
25	He showed them the entrance into the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man and all his family go.	And he showed them the way into the city. 26	The man went into the land of the Hittites, built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day. 27	Manasseh didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its towns, nor Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.	Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land.	But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land.
28	When Israel had grown strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, and didn’t utterly drive them out.	When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely.	When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.
29	Ephraim didn’t drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, but the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.	And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.	Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.
30	Zebulun didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites lived among them, and became subject to forced labor.	Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor.	Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor.
31	Asher didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;	Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob,	Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob.
32	but the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they didn’t drive them out.	so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out.	The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out.
33	Naphtali didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but he lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and of Beth Anath became subject to forced labor.	Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.	Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them.
34	The Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill country, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley;	The Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain.	The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.
35	but the Amorites would dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim. Yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to forced labor.	The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor.	And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor.
36	The border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.	And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.	The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond.
