1	And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the sons of Israel asked of YHWH, saying, “Who shall go up for us against the Canaanite as the first to fight against them?”	After the death of Joshua, the people of Israel inquired of the LORD, “Who shall go up first for us against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”	After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, “Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Canaanites?”
2	And YHWH said, “Judah shall go up; behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.”	The LORD said, “Judah shall go up; behold, I have given the land into his hand.”	The LORD answered, “Judah shall go up; I have given the land into their hands.”
3	And Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into my allotment, that we may fight against the Canaanite. And will go likewise I with you into your allotment.” And Simeon went with him.	And Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into the territory allotted to me, that we may fight against the Canaanites. And I likewise will go with you into the territory allotted to you.” So Simeon went with him.	The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, “Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours.” So the Simeonites went with them.
4	And Judah went up, and YHWH delivered the Canaanite and the Perizzite into their hand, and they struck them in Bezek—ten thousand men.	Then Judah went up and the LORD gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand, and they defeated 10,000 of them at Bezek.	When Judah attacked, the LORD gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek.
5	And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek and fought against him, and they struck down the Canaanite and the Perizzite.	They found Adoni-bezek at Bezek and fought against him and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites.	It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites.
6	And Adoni-bezek fled, and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his feet.	Adoni-bezek fled, but they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.	Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
7	And Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings, with the thumbs of their hands and their feet cut off, have been scavenging under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.	And Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.	Then Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
8	And the sons of Judah fought against Jerusalem, and they took it, and they struck it with the mouth of the sword, and they sent the city into fire.	And the men of Judah fought against Jerusalem and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire.	The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
9	And afterward the sons of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanite dwelling in the hill country, and in the Negev, and in the Shephelah.	And afterward the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, in the Negeb, and in the lowland.	After that, Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev and the western foothills.
10	And Judah went against the Canaanite dwelling in Hebron (and the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba), and they killed Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.	And Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (now the name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-arba), and they defeated Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.	They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath Arba) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.
11	And they went from there against those dwelling in Debir (and the name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher).	From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. The name of Debir was formerly Kiriath-sepher.	From there they advanced against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher).
12	And Caleb said, “Whoever strikes down Kiriath-sepher and takes it, I will give to him Acsah my daughter as wife.”	And Caleb said, “He who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give him Achsah my daughter for a wife.”	And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.”
13	And Othniel son of Kenaz, the younger brother of Caleb, took it. And he gave to him Acsah his daughter as wife.	And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, captured it. And he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife.	Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.
14	And it came to pass in her coming in, that she urged him to ask from her father the field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What shall be unto you?”	When she came to him, she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?”	One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”
15	And she said to him, “Give to me a blessing. Since the land of the Negev you have given me, give to me springs of water.” And Caleb gave to her the upper springs and the lower springs.	She said to him, “Give me a blessing. Since you have set me in the land of the Negeb, give me also springs of water.” And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.	She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.
16	And the sons of the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, went up from the City of Palms with the sons of Judah into the Wilderness of Judah, which is in the Negev of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.	And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad, and they went and settled with the people.	The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.
17	And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they attacked the Canaanite dwelling in Zephath and devoted it to destruction. And they called the name of the city Hormah.	And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they defeated the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath and devoted it to destruction. So the name of the city was called Hormah.	Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah.
18	And Judah took Gaza and its territory, and Ashkelon and its territory, and Ekron and its territory.	Judah also captured Gaza with its territory, and Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory.	Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron—each city with its territory.
19	And YHWH was with Judah, and he possessed the hill country. But he did not dispossess those dwelling in the valley, because they had chariots of iron.	And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the hill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had chariots of iron.	The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron.
20	And they gave to Caleb Hebron, as Moses had said, and he dispossessed from there the three sons of Anak.	And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he drove out from it the three sons of Anak.	As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak.
21	And the Jebusite who inhabited Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin did not dispossess. And the Jebusite has dwelt with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.	But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.	The Benjamites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.
22	And the house of Joseph went up—even they—against Bethel, and YHWH was with them.	The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.	Now the tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them.
23	And the house of Joseph they sent to spy out in Bethel (and the name of the city was formerly Luz),	And the house of Joseph scouted out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.)	When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz),
24	and the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, “Show us, please, the entrance to the city, and we will show you kindness.”	And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, “Please show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.”	the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.”
25	And he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the mouth of the sword. And the man and all his family they sent away.	And he showed them the way into the city. And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go.	So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family.
26	And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city, and he called its name Luz; that is its name to this day.	And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city and called its name Luz. That is its name to this day.	He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day.
27	And Manasseh did not dispossess those of Beth-shean and its villages, and Taanach and its villages, and those dwelling in Dor and its villages, and those dwelling in Ibleam and its villages, and those dwelling in Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanite were determined to dwell in this land.	Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land.	But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land.
28	And it came to pass, when Israel became strong, that he put the Canaanite to forced labor, and he did not drive him out completely.	When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely.	When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.
29	And Ephraim did not dispossess the Canaanite dwelling in Gezer; and the Canaanite dwelt among them in Gezer.	And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.	Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.
30	Zebulun did not dispossess those dwelling in Kitron, and those dwelling in Nahalol; and the Canaanite dwelt among them and were put to forced labor.	Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor.	Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor.
31	Asher did not dispossess those dwelling in Acco, and those dwelling in Sidon, and of Ahlab, and Achzib, and Helbah, and Aphek, and Rehob.	Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob,	Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob.
32	And the Asherite dwelt among the Canaanite dwellers of the land, for they did not drive them out.	so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out.	The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out.
33	Naphtali did not dispossess those dwelling in Beth-shemesh and those dwelling in Beth-anath, and they dwelt among the Canaanite dwellers of the land. And those dwelling in Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were put to forced labor to them.	Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.	Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them.
34	And the Amorite pressed the sons of Dan into the hill country, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley.	The Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain.	The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.
35	And the Amorite were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim. And the strength of the house of Joseph became heavy, and they were put to forced labor.	The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor.	And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor.
36	And the border of the Amorite was from the Ascent of Akrabbim to Sela and upward.	And the border of the Amorites ran from the ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.	The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond.
