6 (Now they were asking this in an attempt to trap him, so that they could bring charges against him.) Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger. This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 When they persisted in asking him, he stood up straight and replied, |Whoever among you is guiltless may be the first to throw a stone at her.| And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
8 Then he bent over again and wrote on the ground. And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 Now when they heard this, they began to drift away one at a time, starting with the older ones, until Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.
10 Jesus stood up straight and said to her, |Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?| Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 She replied, |No one, Lord.| And Jesus said, |I do not condemn you either. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.|]] She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” ]] “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,|Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
12 Then Jesus spoke out again, |I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.| Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13 So the Pharisees objected, |You testify about yourself; your testimony is not true!| So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”
14 Jesus answered, |Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you people do not know where I came from or where I am going. Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.
15 You people judge by outward appearances; I do not judge anyone. You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.
16 But if I judge, my evaluation is accurate, because I am not alone when I judge, but I and the Father who sent me do so together. Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.
17 It is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
18 I testify about myself and the Father who sent me testifies about me.| I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”
19 Then they began asking him, |Who is your father?| Jesus answered, |You do not know either me or my Father. If you knew me you would know my Father too.| They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” Then they asked him, “Where is your father?” “You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
20 (Jesus spoke these words near the offering box while he was teaching in the temple courts. No one seized him because his time had not yet come.) These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
21 Then Jesus said to them again, |I am going away, and you will look for me but will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come.| So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”
22 So the Jewish leaders began to say, |Perhaps he is going to kill himself, because he says, 'Where I am going you cannot come.'| So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 Jesus replied, |You people are from below; I am from above. You people are from this world; I am not from this world. He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 Thus I told you that you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.| I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”
25 So they said to him, |Who are you?| Jesus replied, |What I have told you from the beginning. So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. “Who are you?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
26 I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the Father who sent me is truthful, and the things I have heard from him I speak to the world.| I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”
27 (They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.) They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.
28 Then Jesus said, |When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak just what the Father taught me. So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.
29 And the one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do those things that please him.| And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”
30 While he was saying these things, many people believed in him. As he was saying these things, many believed in him. Even as he spoke, many believed in him.
31 Then Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him, |If you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciples So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.| and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 |We are descendants of Abraham,| they replied, |and have never been anyone's slaves! How can you say, 'You will become free'?| They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus answered them, |I tell you the solemn truth, everyone who practices sin is a slave of sin. Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35 The slave does not remain in the family forever, but the son remains forever. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
36 So if the son sets you free, you will be really free. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
37 I know that you are Abraham's descendants. But you want to kill me, because my teaching makes no progress among you. I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word.
38 I am telling you the things I have seen while with the Father; as for you, practice the things you have heard from the Father!| I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.” I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
39 They answered him, |Abraham is our father!| Jesus replied, |If you are Abraham's children, you would be doing the deeds of Abraham. They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, “Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did.
40 But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth I heard from God. Abraham did not do this! but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
41 You people are doing the deeds of your father.| Then they said to Jesus, |We were not born as a result of immorality! We have only one Father, God himself.| You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” You are doing the works of your own father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
42 Jesus replied, |If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come from God and am now here. I have not come on my own initiative, but he sent me. Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me.
43 Why don't you understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot accept my teaching. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.
44 You people are from your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
45 But because I am telling you the truth, you do not believe me. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!
46 Who among you can prove me guilty of any sin? If I am telling you the truth, why don't you believe me? Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?
47 The one who belongs to God listens and responds to God's words. You don't listen and respond, because you don't belong to God.| Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
48 The Judeans replied, |Aren't we correct in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed by a demon?| The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”
49 Jesus answered, |I am not possessed by a demon, but I honor my Father--and yet you dishonor me. Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me.
50 I am not trying to get praise for myself. There is one who demands it, and he also judges. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge.
51 I tell you the solemn truth, if anyone obeys my teaching, he will never see death.| Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
52 Then the Judeans responded, |Now we know you're possessed by a demon! Both Abraham and the prophets died, and yet you say, 'If anyone obeys my teaching, he will never experience death.' The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death.
53 You aren't greater than our father Abraham who died, are you? And the prophets died too! Who do you claim to be?| Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, |If I glorify myself, my glory is worthless. The one who glorifies me is my Father, about whom you people say, 'He is our God.' Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.
55 Yet you do not know him, but I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I obey his teaching. But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.
56 Your father Abraham was overjoyed to see my day, and he saw it and was glad.| Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
57 Then the Judeans replied, |You are not yet fifty years old! Have you seen Abraham?| So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 Jesus said to them, |I tell you the solemn truth, before Abraham came into existence, I am!| Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
59 Then they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out from the temple area. So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
