2	And in the morning he came again to the temple, and all the people were coming to him; and he sat down and taught them.	Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them.	At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.
3	Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who was caught in adultery; and they made her to stand in the midst. 4	They said to him, Teacher, this woman was caught openly in the act of adultery.	they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery.	and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
5	Now in the law of Moses it is commanded that women such as these should be stoned; but what do you say?	Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?”	In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.Now what do you say?”
6	They said this to tempt him, that they might have a cause to accuse him. While Jesus was bent down, he was writing on the ground.	This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground.	They were using this question as a trap,in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.
7	When they were through questioning him, he straightened himself up and said to them, He who is among you without sin, let him first throw a stone at her.	And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”	When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
8	And again as he bent down, he wrote on the ground.	And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground.	Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9	And when they heard it, they left one by one, beginning with the elders; and the man woman was left alone in the midst.	But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him.	At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.
10	When Jesus straightened himself up, he said to the woman, Where are they?	Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”	Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11	did no henceforth, do not sin again.	She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” ]]	“No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,\|Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
12	Again Jesus spoke to them and said, I am the light of the world; he who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but he shall find for himself the light of life.	Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”	When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13	The Pharisees said to him, You testify concerning yourself; your testimony is not true.	So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.”	The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”
14	Jesus answered and said to them, Even though I testify concerning myself, my testimony is true, because I know whence I came and whither I go; but you do not know whence I came, or whither I go.	Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.	Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.
15	You judge according to the flesh; but I judge no man.	You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.	You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.
16	And if I should judge, my judgment is true; because I am not doing it alone, but I and my Father who sent me.	Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.	But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.
17	And it is written in your own law, that the testimony of two men is true.	In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true.	In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
18	I testify concerning myself, and my Father who sent me testifies concerning me.	I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.”	I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”
19	They said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus answered and said to them, You know neither me, nor my Father; if you knew me, you would know my Father also.	They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”	Then they asked him, “Where is your father?” “You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
20	These words he spoke in the treasury, while he taught in the temple; and no man arrested him, for his time had not yet come.	These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.	He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
21	Jesus again said to them, I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sins; and where I am going you cannot come.	So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”	Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”
22	The Jews said, Why, will he kill himself? for he says, Where I am going, you cannot come.	So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”	This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23	And he said to them, You are from be- low, and I am from above; you are of this world, but I am not of this world.	He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.	But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
24	I told you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.	I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”	I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”
25	The Jews said, Who are you? Jesus said to them, Even though I should begin to speak to you,	So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning.	“Who are you?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
26	I have many things to say and to judge concerning you; but he who sent me is true; and I speak in the world only those things which I have heard from him.	I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.”	“I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”
27	They did not understand that he spoke to them concerning the Father.	They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father.	They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.
28	Again Jesus said to them, When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will understand that I am he, and I do nothing of my own accord; but as my Father has taught me, so I speak just like him.	So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me.	So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.
29	And he who sent me is with me; and my Father has never left me alone, because I always do what pleases him.	And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”	The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”
30	While he was speaking these words, a great many believed in him.	As he was saying these things, many believed in him.	Even as he spoke, many believed in him.
31	Then Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him, If you abide by my word, you are truly my disciples.	So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,	To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
32	And you will know the truth, and that very truth will make you free.	and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”	Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33	They said to him, We are the seed of Abraham, and we have never been enslaved to any man; how do you say, You will be free sons?	They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”	They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34	Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Whoever commits sin is a servant of sin.	Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.	Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35	And a servant does not remain in the house forever, but the son remains forever.	The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.	Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
36	If therefore, the Son shall make you free, you shall truly become free.	So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.	So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
37	I know you are the seed of Abraham; but still you want to kill me, because you have no room in you for my word.	I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you.	I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word.
38	I speak what I have seen with my Father; and you do what you have seen with your father.	I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”	I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
39	They answered and said to him, Our own father is Abraham. Jesus said to them, If you were the sons of Abraham, you would be doing the works of Abraham.	They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did,	“Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did.
40	But behold, now you want to kill me, even a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.	but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.	As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
41	But you do the works of your father. They said to him, We are not born of fornication; we have one Father, God.	You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.”	You are doing the works of your own father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
42	Jesus said to them, If God were your Father, you would love me, for I proceeded and came from God; I did not come of my own accord, but he sent me.	Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.	Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me.
43	Why therefore do you not understand my word? Because you cannot obey my word?	Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word.	Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.
44	You are from the father of accusation, and you want to do the lusts of your father, he who is a murderer of men from the very beginning and who never stands by the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks he speaks his own lie, because he is a liar, and the father of it.	You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.	You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
45	But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.	But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.	Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!
46	Which one of you can rebuke me because of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?	Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?	Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?
47	He who is of God, hears God’s words; for this reason you do not hear, because you are not of God.	Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”	Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
48	The Jews answered and said to him, Did we not say well, that you are a Samaritan, and that you are crazy?	The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?”	The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”
49	Jesus said to them, I am not crazy; but I honor my Father, and you curse me.	Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.	“I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me.
50	I do not seek my glory; there is one who seeks and judges.	Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge.	I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge.
51	Truly, truly, I say to you, Whoever obeys my word, shall never see death.	Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”	Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
52	The Jews said to him, Now we are sure that you are insane. Abraham and the prophets have died; and yet you say, Whoever obeys my word, shall never taste death.	The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’	At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death.
53	Why, are you greater than our father Abraham who died, and the prophets who died? Whom do you make yourself?	Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?”	Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54	Jesus said to them, If I honor myself, my honor is nothing; but it is my Father who honors me, the one of whom you say, He is our God.	Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’	Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.
55	Yet you have not known him, but I do know him; and if I should say, I do not know him, I would be a liar like yourselves; but I do know him, and I obey his word.	But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word.	Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.
56	Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it and was glad.	Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.”	Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
57	The Jews said to him, You are not yet fifty years old, and yet have you seen Abraham?	So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?”	“You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58	Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Before Abraham was born, I was.	Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”	“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
59	So they took up stones, to stone him; and Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, and he passed through the midst of them, and went away.	So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.	At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
