1 Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2 Early the next morning he returned to the temple courtyard. All the people went to him, so he sat down and began to teach them. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.
3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught committing adultery. They made her stand in front of everyone The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group
4 and asked Jesus, |Teacher, we caught this woman in the act of adultery. they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
5 In his teachings, Moses ordered us to stone women like this to death. What do you say?| Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.Now what do you say?”
6 They asked this to test him. They wanted to find a reason to bring charges against him. Jesus bent down and used his finger to write on the ground. This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. They were using this question as a trap,in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.
7 When they persisted in asking him questions, he straightened up and said, |The person who is sinless should be the first to throw a stone at her.| And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
8 Then he bent down again and continued writing on the ground. And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 One by one, beginning with the older men, the scribes and Pharisees left. Jesus was left alone with the woman. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.
10 Then Jesus straightened up and asked her, |Where did they go? Has anyone condemned you?| Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 The woman answered, |No one, sir.| Jesus said, |I don't condemn you either. Go! From now on don't sin.| She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” ]] “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,|Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
12 Jesus spoke to the Pharisees again. He said, |I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will have a life filled with light and will never live in the dark.| Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13 The Pharisees said to him, |You testify on your own behalf, so your testimony isn't true.| So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”
14 Jesus replied to them, |Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is true because I know where I came from and where I'm going. However, you don't know where I came from or where I'm going. Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.
15 You judge the way humans do. I don't judge anyone. You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.
16 Even if I do judge, my judgment is valid because I don't make it on my own. I make my judgment with the Father who sent me. Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.
17 Your own teachings say that the testimony of two people is true. In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
18 I testify on my own behalf, and so does the Father who sent me.| I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”
19 The Pharisees asked him, |Where is your father?| Jesus replied, |You don't know me or my Father. If you knew me, you would also know my Father.| They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” Then they asked him, “Where is your father?” “You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
20 Jesus spoke these words while he was teaching in the treasury area of the temple courtyard. No one arrested him, because his time had not yet come. These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
21 Jesus spoke to the Pharisees again. He said, |I'm going away, and you'll look for me. But you will die because of your sin. You can't go where I'm going.| So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”
22 Then the Jews asked, |Is he going to kill himself? Is that what he means when he says, 'You can't go where I'm going'?| So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 Jesus said to them, |You're from below. I'm from above. You're from this world. I'm not from this world. He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 For this reason I told you that you'll die because of your sins. If you don't believe that I am the one, you'll die because of your sins.| I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”
25 The Jews asked him, |Who did you say you are?| Jesus told them, |I am who I said I was from the beginning. So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. “Who are you?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
26 I have a lot I could say about you and a lot I could condemn you for. But the one who sent me is true. So I tell the world exactly what he has told me.| I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”
27 (The Jews didn't know that he was talking to them about the Father.) They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.
28 So Jesus told them, |When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you'll know that I am the one and that I can't do anything on my own. Instead, I speak as the Father taught me. So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.
29 Besides, the one who sent me is with me. He hasn't left me by myself. I always do what pleases him.| And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”
30 As Jesus was saying this, many people believed in him. As he was saying these things, many believed in him. Even as he spoke, many believed in him.
31 So Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him, |If you live by what I say, you are truly my disciples. So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.| and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 They replied to Jesus, |We are Abraham's descendants, and we've never been anyone's slaves. So how can you say that we will be set free?| They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus answered them, |I can guarantee this truth: Whoever lives a sinful life is a slave to sin. Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35 A slave doesn't live in the home forever, but a son does. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be absolutely free. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
37 I know that you're Abraham's descendants. However, you want to kill me because you don't like what I'm saying. I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word.
38 What I'm saying is what I have seen in my Father's presence. But you do what you've heard from your father.| I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.” I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
39 The Jews replied to Jesus, |Abraham is our father.| Jesus told them, |If you were Abraham's children, you would do what Abraham did. They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, “Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did.
40 I am a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. But now you want to kill me. Abraham wouldn't have done that. but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
41 You're doing what your father does.| The Jews said to Jesus, |We're not illegitimate children. God is our only Father.| You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” You are doing the works of your own father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
42 Jesus told them, |If God were your Father, you would love me. After all, I'm here, and I came from God. I didn't come on my own. Instead, God sent me. Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me.
43 Why don't you understand the language I use? Is it because you can't understand the words I use? Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.
44 You come from your father, the devil, and you desire to do what your father wants you to do. The devil was a murderer from the beginning. He has never been truthful. He doesn't know what the truth is. Whenever he tells a lie, he's doing what comes naturally to him. He's a liar and the father of lies. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
45 So you don't believe me because I tell the truth. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!
46 Can any of you convict me of committing a sin? If I'm telling the truth, why don't you believe me? Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?
47 The person who belongs to God understands what God says. You don't understand because you don't belong to God.| Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
48 The Jews replied to Jesus, |Aren't we right when we say that you're a Samaritan and that you're possessed by a demon?| The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”
49 Jesus answered, |I'm not possessed. I honor my Father, but you dishonor me. Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me.
50 I don't want my own glory. But there is someone who wants it, and he is the judge. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge.
51 I can guarantee this truth: Whoever obeys what I say will never see death.| Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
52 The Jews told Jesus, |Now we know that you're possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets, but you say, 'Whoever does what I say will never taste death.' The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death.
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets have also died. Who do you think you are?| Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus said, |If I bring glory to myself, my glory is nothing. My Father is the one who gives me glory, and you say that he is your God. Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.
55 Yet, you haven't known him. However, I know him. If I would say that I didn't know him, I would be a liar like all of you. But I do know him, and I do what he says. But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.
56 Your father Abraham was pleased to see that my day was coming. He saw it and was happy.| Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
57 The Jews said to Jesus, |You're not even fifty years old. How could you have seen Abraham?| So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 Jesus told them, |I can guarantee this truth: Before Abraham was ever born, I am.| Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
59 Then some of the Jews picked up stones to throw at Jesus. However, Jesus was concealed, and he left the temple courtyard. So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
