2 Early in the morning He went back into the temple courts \the temple/. All the people came to Him, and He sat down to teach them. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.
3 The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. 4 and said, “Teacher {Didaskale}, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
5 In the Law Moses (drawn out) commanded us to stone such a woman. So what do You say? Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.Now what do you say?”
6 They said this to test Him, in order to have a basis for accusing Him. But Jesus (YHWH saves) bent down and began to write on the ground with His finger. This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. They were using this question as a trap,in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.
7 When they continued to question Him, He straightened up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you⁺ be the first to cast a stone at her. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
8 And again He bent down and wrote on the ground. And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 When they heard this [and were convicted by their conscience,], they began to go away one by one, beginning with the older ones, until only Jesus (YHWH saves) was left, with the woman standing there. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.
10 Then Jesus (YHWH saves) straightened up [and saw no one but the woman.] and asked her, “Woman, where are your accusers [where are they]? Has no one condemned you? Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, Lord {kyrie}, she answered. “Then neither do I condemn you, Jesus (YHWH saves) declared. “Now go and sin no more. She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.” ]] “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,|Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
12 Once again, Jesus (YHWH saves) spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life. Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13 So the Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not valid. So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.”
14 Jesus (YHWH saves) replied, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you⁺ do not know where I came from or where I am going. Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.
15 You⁺ judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.
16 But even if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone; I am with the Father {patēr} who sent Me \but it is I and the Father who sent Me/. Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.
17 Even in your⁺ own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid . In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true.
18 I am One who testifies about Myself, and the Father {Patēr}, who sent Me, also testifies about Me. I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”
19 “Where is Your Father {Patēr}? they asked Him. “You⁺ do not know Me or My Father {Patera}, Jesus (YHWH saves) answered. “If you⁺ knew Me, you⁺ would know My Father as well. They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” Then they asked him, “Where is your father?” “You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
20 He spoke these words {rhēmata} while teaching {didaskōn} in the temple courts, near the treasury. Yet no one seized Him, because His hour had not yet come. These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts near the place where the offerings were put. Yet no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come.
21 Again He said to them, “I am going away, and you⁺ will look for Me, but you⁺ will die in your⁺ sin. Where I am going, you⁺ cannot come. So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”
22 So the Jews (people of praise) began to ask, “Will He kill Himself, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you⁺ cannot come’? So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” This made the Jews ask, “Will he kill himself? Is that why he says, ‘Where I go, you cannot come’?”
23 Then He told them, “You⁺ are from below; I am from above. You⁺ are of this world; I am not of this world. He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
24 That is why I told you⁺ that you⁺ would die in your⁺ sins. For unless you⁺ believe that I am He, you⁺ will die in your⁺ sins. I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.” I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.”
25 “Who are You? they asked. “Just what I have been telling you⁺ from the beginning, Jesus (YHWH saves) replied. So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. “Who are you?” they asked. “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning,” Jesus replied.
26 “I have much to say about you⁺ and much to judge. But the One who sent Me is truthful, and what I have heard from Him, I tell the world. I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” “I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.”
27 They did not understand that He was telling them about the Father {Patera}. They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.
28 So Jesus (YHWH saves) said, “When you⁺ have lifted up the Son of Man, then you⁺ will know that I am He, and that I do nothing on My own, but speak exactly what the Father {Patēr} has taught Me. So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me. So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.
29 He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him. And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”
30 As Jesus spoke these things, many believed (had faith) in Him. As he was saying these things, many believed in him. Even as he spoke, many believed in him.
31 So He said to the Jews (people of praise) who had believed Him, “If you⁺ continue in My word, you⁺ are truly My disciples (pupils). So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
32 Then you⁺ will know the truth, and the truth will set you⁺ free. and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 “We are Abraham’s descendants (seed), they answered. “We have never been slaves to anyone. How can You say we will be set free? They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus (YHWH saves) replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you⁺, everyone who sins is a slave {doulos} to sin. Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35 A slave {doulos} does not remain in the house forever \to the age/, but a son remains forever. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
36 So if the Son sets you⁺ free, you⁺ will be free indeed. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
37 I know you⁺ are Abraham’s descendants (seed), but you⁺ are trying to kill Me because My word has no place within you⁺. I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word.
38 I speak of what I have seen in the presence of the Father, and you⁺ do what you⁺ have heard from your⁺ father. I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.” I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
39 “Abraham (father of many) is our father {patēr}, they replied. “If you⁺ were children of Abraham, said Jesus (YHWH saves), “you⁺ would do the works (acts) of Abraham. They answered him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, “Abraham is our father,” they answered. “If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did.
40 But now you⁺ are trying to kill Me, a man who has told you⁺ the truth that I heard from God {Theou}. Abraham (father of many) never did such a thing. but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
41 You⁺ are doing the works (acts) of your⁺ father. “We are not illegitimate children, they declared. “Our only Father {Patera} is God Himself. You are doing the works your father did.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God.” You are doing the works of your own father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
42 Jesus (YHWH saves) said to them, “If God {Theos} were your⁺ Father {Patēr}, you⁺ would love {ēgapate} Me, for I have come here from God {Theou}. I have not come on My own, but He sent Me. Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me.
43 Why do you⁺ not understand what I am saying? It is because you⁺ are unable to accept My message. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.
44 You⁺ belong to your⁺ father, the devil {diabolou}, and you⁺ want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father {patēr} of lies. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
45 But because I speak the truth, you⁺ do not believe Me! But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!
46 Which of you⁺ can prove Me guilty of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you⁺ not believe Me? Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me?
47 Whoever belongs to God {Theou} hears the words {rhēmata} of God. The reason you⁺ do not hear is that you⁺ do not belong to God. Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
48 The Jews (people of praise) answered Him, “Are we not right to say that You are a Samaritan and You have a demon? The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”
49 “I do not have a demon, Jesus (YHWH saves) replied, “but I honor My Father {Patera}, and you⁺ dishonor Me. Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me.
50 I do not seek My own glory {doxan}. There is One who seeks it, and He is the Judge. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge.
51 Truly, truly, I tell you⁺, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
52 “Now we know that You have a demon! declared the Jews (people of praise). “Abraham (father of many) died, and so did the prophets, yet You say that anyone who keeps Your word will never taste death. The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death.
53 Are You greater than our father Abraham (father of many)? He died, as did the prophets. Who do You claim to be? Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus (YHWH saves) answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory {doxa} means nothing. The One who glorifies Me is My Father {Patēr}, of whom you⁺ say, ‘He is our [Your] God {Theos}.’ Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me.
55 You⁺ do not know Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you⁺. But I do know Him, and I keep His word. But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word.
56 Your⁺ father {patēr} Abraham (father of many) rejoiced that he would see My day. He saw it and was glad. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
57 Then the Jews (people of praise) said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham (father of many)? So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Truly, truly, I tell you⁺, Jesus (YHWH saves) declared, “before Abraham (father of many) was born, I am \before Abraham was, I am!/! Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
59 At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus (YHWH saves) was hidden and went out of the temple area [going through the midst of them, and so He passed by]. So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
