1 Now on the first day of the sabbaths Mary Magdelene comes early in the morning while it was yet dark to the tomb, and sees the stone taken out of the tomb. Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.
2 She runs, therefore, and comes to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and says to them, "They took away the Lord out of the tomb, and we know not where they laid Him!" So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”
3 Peter, therefore, went forth, and the other disciple, and they were going to the tomb. So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.
4 And the two were running together; and the other disciple outran Peter, and came first to the tomb; Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
5 and, having stooped to look within , he beholds the linen cloths lying; yet he went not within. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in.
6 Simon Peter, therefore, also comes, following him, and he went into the tomb; and beholds the linen cloths lying, Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there,
7 and the napkin that was on His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by itself. and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.
8 Then went in, therefore, the other disciple also, who came first to the tomb; and he saw, and believed; Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.
9 for as yet they knew not the Scripture, that He must rise from the dead. for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
10 The disciples, therefore, went away again to their own home. Then the disciples went back to their homes. Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.
11 But Mary was standing without by the tomb, weeping. So, as she was weeping, she stooped to look into the tomb; But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb
12 and she beholds two angels in white, sitting, one at the head, and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.
13 And they say to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She says to them, "Because they took away my Lord, and I know not where they laid Him!" They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”
14 Having said these things, she turned back, and beholds Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
15 Jesus saith to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" She, supposing Him to be the gardener, says to Him, "Sir, if thou didst bear Him away, tell me where thou didst lay Him, and I will take Him away!" Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”
16 Jesus saith to her, "Mary!" Turning, she says to Him, in Hebrew, "Rabboni!" (which is to say, Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).
17 Jesus saith to her, "Touch Me not; for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren, and say to them, "I ascend to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God." Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
18 Mary Magdalene comes, proclaiming to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and that He spake these things to her. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her. Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
19 When, therefore, it was evening, on that day, the first day of sabbaths; and, when, through fear of the Jews, the doors were shut, where the disciples were; Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith to them, "Peace be to you!" On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
20 And, having said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples, therefore, rejoiced, when they saw the Lord. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21 Jesus, therefore, said to them again, "Peace be to you! As the Father hath sent Me, I also send you." Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”
22 And, having said this, He breathed upon them, and said to them, "Receive ye the Holy Spirit. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted to them; whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained." If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.
25 The other disciples, therefore, said to him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and press my hand into His side, I will not believe." So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
26 And, after eight days, again His disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, "Peace be to you!" Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
27 Then He saith to Thomas, "Reach hither your finger, and see My hands; and reach hither your hand, and press it into My side; and be not faithless, but believing." Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
28 Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus saith to him, "Because you have seen Me, you believe: happy are those who did not see, and yet believed." Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
30 Many other signs, therefore, did Jesus in the presence of the disciples, which have not been written in this book; Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.
31 but these have been written, that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that, believing, ye may have life in His name. but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
