1 Can you pull in Leviathan with a hook or tie his tongue down with a rope? “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook or press down his tongue with a cord? “Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope?
2 Can you put a cord through his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook? Can you put a rope in his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook? Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook?
3 Will he beg you for mercy or speak softly to you? Will he make many pleas to you? Will he speak to you soft words? Will it keep begging you for mercy? Will it speak to you with gentle words?
4 Will he make a covenant with you so that you can take him as a slave forever? Will he make a covenant with you to take him for your servant forever? Will it make an agreement with you for you to take it as your slave for life?
5 Can you play with him like a bird or put him on a leash for your girls? Will you play with him as with a bird, or will you put him on a leash for your girls? Can you make a pet of it like a bird or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?
6 Will traders bargain for him or divide him among the merchants? Will traders bargain over him? Will they divide him up among the merchants? Will traders barter for it? Will they divide it up among the merchants?

10 No one is ferocious enough to rouse Leviathan; who then can stand against Me? No one is so fierce that he dares to stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me? No one is fierce enough to rouse it. Who then is able to stand against me?
11 Who confronted Me, that I should repay him? Everything under heaven belongs to Me. Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine. Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.
12 I cannot be silent about his limbs, his power, and his graceful proportions. “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, or his mighty strength, or his goodly frame. “I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs, its strength and its graceful form.
13 Who can strip off his outer covering? Who can penetrate his double layer of armor? Who can strip off his outer garment? Who would come near him with a bridle? Who can strip off its outer coat? Who can penetrate its double coat of armor?
14 Who can open his jaws, surrounded by those terrifying teeth? Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror. Who dares open the doors of its mouth, ringed about with fearsome teeth?
15 His pride is in his rows of scales, closely sealed together. His back is made of rows of shields, shut up closely as with a seal. Its back has rows of shields tightly sealed together;
16 One scale is so close to another that no air can pass between them. One is so near to another that no air can come between them. each is so close to the next that no air can pass between.
17 They are joined to one another, so closely connected they cannot be separated. They are joined one to another; they clasp each other and cannot be separated. They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted.
18 His snorting flashes with light, while his eyes are like the rays of dawn. His sneezings flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the dawn. Its snorting throws out flashes of light; its eyes are like the rays of dawn.
19 Flaming torches shoot from his mouth; fiery sparks fly out! Out of his mouth go flaming torches; sparks of fire leap forth. Flames stream from its mouth; sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke billows from his nostrils as from a boiling pot or burning reeds. Out of his nostrils comes forth smoke, as from a boiling pot and burning rushes. Smoke pours from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
21 His breath sets coals ablaze, and flames pour out of his mouth. His breath kindles coals, and a flame comes forth from his mouth. Its breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from its mouth.
22 Strength resides in his neck, and dismay dances before him. In his neck abides strength, and terror dances before him. Strength resides in its neck; dismay goes before it.
23 The folds of his flesh are joined together, solid as metal and immovable. The folds of his flesh stick together, firmly cast on him and immovable. The folds of its flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable.
24 His heart is as hard as a rock, as hard as a lower millstone! His heart is hard as a stone, hard as the lower millstone. Its chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone.
25 When Leviathan rises, the mighty are terrified; they withdraw because of his thrashing. When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid; at the crashing they are beside themselves. When it rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before its thrashing.
26 The sword that reaches him will have no effect, nor will a spear, dart, or arrow. Though the sword reaches him, it does not avail, nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin. The sword that reaches it has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.
27 He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. He counts iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. Iron it treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood.
28 No arrow can make him flee; slingstones become like stubble to him. The arrow cannot make him flee; for him, sling stones are turned to stubble. Arrows do not make it flee; slingstones are like chaff to it.
29 A club is regarded as stubble, and he laughs at the sound of a javelin. Clubs are counted as stubble; he laughs at the rattle of javelins. A club seems to it but a piece of straw; it laughs at the rattling of the lance.
30 His undersides are jagged potsherds, spreading the mud like a threshing sledge. His underparts are like sharp potsherds; he spreads himself like a threshing sledge on the mire. Its undersides are jagged potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.
31 He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron; he makes the sea like an ointment jar. He makes the deep boil like a pot; he makes the sea like a pot of ointment. It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.

33 He has no equal on earth— a creature devoid of fear! On earth there is not his like, a creature without fear. Nothing on earth is its equal— a creature without fear.
34 He surveys everything that is haughty; he is king over all the proud beasts. He sees everything that is high; he is king over all the sons of pride.” It looks down on all that are haughty; it is king over all that are proud.”
