1 <V 40:20>Can you draw out the leviathan with a hook, and can you bind his tongue with a cord? “Can you draw out Leviathan with a fishhook or press down his tongue with a cord? “Can you pull in Leviathan with a fishhook or tie down its tongue with a rope?
2 <V 40:21>Can you place a ring in his nose, or bore through his jaw with an arm band? Can you put a rope in his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook? Can you put a cord through its nose or pierce its jaw with a hook?
3 <V 40:22>Will he offer many prayers to you, or speak to you quietly? Will he make many pleas to you? Will he speak to you soft words? Will it keep begging you for mercy? Will it speak to you with gentle words?
4 <V 40:23>Will he form a covenant with you, and will you accept him as a servant forever? Will he make a covenant with you to take him for your servant forever? Will it make an agreement with you for you to take it as your slave for life?
5 <V 40:24>Will you play with him as with a bird, or tether him for your handmaids? Will you play with him as with a bird, or will you put him on a leash for your girls? Can you make a pet of it like a bird or put it on a leash for the young women in your house?
6 <V 40:25>Will your friends cut him into pieces, will dealers distribute him? Will traders bargain over him? Will they divide him up among the merchants? Will traders barter for it? Will they divide it up among the merchants?
7 <V 40:26>Will you fill up bags with his hide, and let his head be used as a home for fishes? Can you fill his skin with harpoons or his head with fishing spears? Can you fill its hide with harpoons or its head with fishing spears?
8 <V 40:27>Place your hand upon him; remember the battle and speak no more. Lay your hands on him; remember the battle—you will not do it again! If you lay a hand on it, you will remember the struggle and never do it again!
9 <V 40:28>Behold, his hope will fail him, and in the sight of all, he will be thrown down. Behold, the hope of a man is false; he is laid low even at the sight of him. Any hope of subduing it is false; the mere sight of it is overpowering.
10 <V 41:1>I will not rouse him, as the cruel would do, for who is able to withstand my countenance? No one is so fierce that he dares to stir him up. Who then is he who can stand before me? No one is fierce enough to rouse it. Who then is able to stand against me?
11 <V 41:2>Who has given to me beforehand, so that I should repay him? All things that are under heaven are mine. Who has first given to me, that I should repay him? Whatever is under the whole heaven is mine. Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.
12 <V 41:3>I will not spare him, nor his powerful words and counterfeit attempts at supplication. “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, or his mighty strength, or his goodly frame. “I will not fail to speak of Leviathan’s limbs, its strength and its graceful form.
13 <V 41:4>Who can reveal the beauty of his garment? And who can enter the middle of his mouth? Who can strip off his outer garment? Who would come near him with a bridle? Who can strip off its outer coat? Who can penetrate its double coat of armor?
14 <V 41:5>Who can open the doors of his face? I gave fear to the circle of his teeth. Who can open the doors of his face? Around his teeth is terror. Who dares open the doors of its mouth, ringed about with fearsome teeth?
15 <V 41:6>His body is like shields fused together, like dense scales pressed over one another. His back is made of rows of shields, shut up closely as with a seal. Its back has rows of shields tightly sealed together;
16 <V 41:7>One is joined to another, and not even air can pass between them. One is so near to another that no air can come between them. each is so close to the next that no air can pass between.
17 <V 41:8>They adhere to one another, and they hold themselves in place and will not be separated. They are joined one to another; they clasp each other and cannot be separated. They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted.
18 <V 41:9>His sneezing has the brilliance of fire, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. His sneezings flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the dawn. Its snorting throws out flashes of light; its eyes are like the rays of dawn.
19 <V 41:10>Lamps proceed from his mouth, like torches of fire burning brightly. Out of his mouth go flaming torches; sparks of fire leap forth. Flames stream from its mouth; sparks of fire shoot out.
20 <V 41:11>Smoke passes out of his nostrils, like a pot that is heated and boiling. Out of his nostrils comes forth smoke, as from a boiling pot and burning rushes. Smoke pours from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning reeds.
21 <V 41:12>His breath causes coal to burn, and a flame comes forth from his mouth. His breath kindles coals, and a flame comes forth from his mouth. Its breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from its mouth.
22 <V 41:13>Strength dwells in his neck, and destitution goes before his presence. In his neck abides strength, and terror dances before him. Strength resides in its neck; dismay goes before it.
23 <V 41:14>The parts of his body work in harmony together. He will send lightning bolts against him, and they will not be carried to another place. The folds of his flesh stick together, firmly cast on him and immovable. The folds of its flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable.
24 <V 41:15>His heart will be as hard as a stone and as dense as a blacksmith’s anvil. His heart is hard as a stone, hard as the lower millstone. Its chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone.
25 <V 41:16>When he will be raised up, the angels will be afraid, and, because they are terrified, they will purify themselves. When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid; at the crashing they are beside themselves. When it rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before its thrashing.
26 <V 41:17>When a sword catches up with him, it will not be able to settle in, nor a spear, nor a breastplate. Though the sword reaches him, it does not avail, nor the spear, the dart, or the javelin. The sword that reaches it has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.
27 <V 41:18>For he will consider iron as if it were chaff, and brass as if it were rotten wood. He counts iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. Iron it treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood.
28 <V 41:19>The archer will not cause him to flee; the stones of the sling have been turned into stubble for him. The arrow cannot make him flee; for him, sling stones are turned to stubble. Arrows do not make it flee; slingstones are like chaff to it.
29 <V 41:20>He will treat the hammer as if it were stubble, and he will ridicule those who brandish the spear. Clubs are counted as stubble; he laughs at the rattle of javelins. A club seems to it but a piece of straw; it laughs at the rattling of the lance.
30 <V 41:21>The beams of the sun will be under him, and he will dispense gold to them as if it were clay. His underparts are like sharp potsherds; he spreads himself like a threshing sledge on the mire. Its undersides are jagged potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge.
31 <V 41:22>He will make the depths of the sea boil like a pot, and he will set it to bubble just as ointments do. He makes the deep boil like a pot; he makes the sea like a pot of ointment. It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 <V 41:23>A path will shine after him; he will esteem the abyss as if it were weakening with age. Behind him he leaves a shining wake; one would think the deep to be white-haired. It leaves a glistening wake behind it; one would think the deep had white hair.
33 <V 41:24>There is no power on the earth that is being compared to him, who has been made so that he fears no one. On earth there is not his like, a creature without fear. Nothing on earth is its equal— a creature without fear.
34 <V 41:25>He sees every prominent thing; he is king over all the sons of arrogance. He sees everything that is high; he is king over all the sons of pride.” It looks down on all that are haughty; it is king over all that are proud.”
